What’s New to Stream on Netflix for March 2018

By Rob Hunter

Here’s what’s coming to Netflix this month!

Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — March 2018 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Red Dots

The Best

One of last year’s best horror films remained unavailable in the US until this year, and lucky for you it’s still utterly fantastic. Les Affamés (aka Ravenous) makes its debut here as a Netflix Original, and fans of smart “zombie” films that avoid the usual pitfalls will want to check it out sooner rather than later. The film takes a note from 28 Days Later with its rage-filled populace, but they’re given a fresh spin with the addition of some mesmerizing aspects playing out against strong performances and attractive cinematography. There’s emotional weight here in addition to the visceral thrills, and it’s a must-watch for genre fans.

Red Dots

Benji

For Dog Lovers

Dogs are a ubiquitous presence in movies, but there’s only one Benji. (There were actually a few.) The mutt was a movie star, and this month sees his first two features landing on Netflix. Benji and its immediate sequel, For the Love of Benji, both arrive on March 6th, and you’ve got ten days to watch before the brand new Benji premieres on March 16th. The original remains a family classic, and the sequel is at least better than Benji’s team-up with Chevy Chase in Oh! Heavenly Dog (1980). I expect the reboot to fall somewhere in between those extremes.

Red Dots

Moon

For Mute Fans

I get it. You all hated Mute, and I’m in the mocked minority who actually had some fun with it. Perhaps meant as some kind of mea culpa on Netflix’s part, the streaming service is now offering Duncan Jones’ first (and still his best) feature, Moon. If you haven’t seen it do yourself a favor and fall in love with it now. Hell, even if you have seen it the movie is well worth a re-watch or five. Either way it’s more than enough reason to continue getting excited for Jones’ films.

Red Dots

The Descent

The Horror! The Horror!

If you’re looking for something to continue the horror vibe after watching Les Affamés above you can hardly do better than to go below with Neil Marshall’s The Descent. It’s a brilliant slice of subterranean horror that boasts a terrific all female cast, stellar creature design, guaranteed chills, and claustrophobic thrills. The sequel is also available to watch for those so inclined, but don’t feel obligated. Matt Reeves’ Let Me In (available 3/31) is also well worth a watch as it’s a beautiful and bloody coming of age film that shows how good remakes can be in the right hands.
