Teaser Trailer for HBO's 'Tiger' Doc About Golf Legend Tiger Woods

Tiger Doc Trailer

"He will transcend this game…" HBO has unveiled the first teaser trailer for an epic biopic documentary titled Tiger, a monumental and definitive look at the life and times of golf legend Tiger Woods. The doc will be released as a two-part "series" premiering together in January 2021 - a look at the life, success and scandals of golfer Tiger Woods. Co-directed by doc filmmakers Matthew Hamachek & Matthew Heineman (of Cartel Land, City of Ghosts, and The Boy from Medellín). "Few global icons are more visible and less understood than Tiger Woods," EVP of HBO Sports Peter Nelson states. "His prodigy came with painstaking sacrifice; his perfected athleticism immobilized him in agony before the age of 40; his self-made fame enabled a self-destructive world of secrecy; and his redemptive reemergence posed as many questions as it answered — not only about one of the greatest sportsmen ever to live, but also the greater American society that engulfed him… Directors Matthew Heineman and Matthew Hamachek provide viewers a definitively nuanced portrait of Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods." This is a only first look teaser, but I'm already hooked. Let's go.

Here's the first teaser trailer for Hamachek & Heineman's doc Tiger, direct from HBO's YouTube:

Tiger Teaser Trailer

Tiger is a two-part documentary offering a revealing look at the rise, fall, and epic comeback of global icon Tiger Woods. The series paints an intimate picture of the prodigy whose dedication and obsession with the game of golf not only took his fame and success to new heights, but also down a dark, spiraling road that eventually led to a legendary sports comeback, culminated by his victory at the 2019 Masters. It highlights never-before-seen-footage and interviews with those who know Tiger Woods best, including his former caddy and close friend, Steve Williams; golf legend Sir Nick Faldo; his father Earl Woods’ friend and biographer, Pete McDaniel; Tiger’s first true love, Dina Parr; and Rachel Uchitel, the woman at the center of the sex scandal that forever altered Tiger’s world, breaking her silence for the first time. Tiger is co-directed by acclaimed doc filmmakers Matthew Hamachek (editor on City of Ghosts, Amanda Knox, Cartel Land, Gideon's Army) and Matthew Heineman (director of Our Time, Escape Fire, Cartel Land, City of Ghosts, The Boy from Medellín). Exec produced by Alex Gibney, Trevor Davidoski, Jenna Millman, Stacey Offman, and Richard Perello. HBO will debut the Tiger series streaming starting in January 2021.

Review: Landon's 'Freaky' is Body Swap, Blood-Spattering Horror Fun

Freaky Review

Body swap movies have been with us for as long as we can remember. In the original Freaky Friday from 1977, Jodie Foster's character switches places with her mom, played by Barbara Harris. In 18 Again!, it's a grandfather and his grandson. The switch always differs. It can be because of a car accident, magical potion, or a wish cast during the full moon. It can also be a demonic ritual involving a mystical blade – that's what happens in Freaky where a teenage girl switches bodies with a serial killer. This horror comedy, directed by Christopher Landon (of both Happy Death Days), written by Michael Kennedy (Fox's "Bordertown") and Landon, is a bloody feast for every slasher fan, packed with inventive deaths and campy characters.

It's Friday the 13th, and for Millie (Kathryn Newton), it's just another ordinary day in high school. After her father's passing, she helps her mom, Coral (Katie Finneran), with the house chores while her sister, Charlene (Dana Drori), a young police officer, keeps her family in check. But her boring, ordinary daily life is disrupted by a serial killer called "the Butcher" (Vince Vaughn). What was once just an urban legend to scare the kids turns out to be a very real, very dangerous, brutal murderer.

After being stabbed by the Butcher, Millie's nightmare is not over yet. The girl wakes up on a dirty mattress, surrounded by creepy faces of mannequins & dolls - inside the Butcher's body. After the first wave of shock passes, Millie reaches out to her best friends, Nyla (Celeste O'Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich), for help. The teenagers, together with Booker (Uriah Shelton), the boy that Millie likes, must stop the Butcher, whose soul now roams through their high school in a killing spree - inside of Millie's body. The friends have to retrieve the knife used for the body switch before Millie is forever stuck in the man's body.

Landon's Freaky can be described as an incredibly entertaining, campy, blood-soaked fun. It starts with a bang. Or, rather, with a wine bottle. Landon really kicks it up a notch and comes up with the strangest, and hence, more inventive and entirely unique death scenes. There is a bottle of wine involved, yes, and also a cryotherapy machine, or more traditionally - a death scene involving a table saw as seen often in horror.

I does possesses a subtle Happy Death Day vibe – it maintains a similar feeling in regards to the narrative and the combination of comedy and slasher genre elements. The filmmaker incorporates the best parts of many 80s / 90s slashers: the campiness, exaggerated characters, and a masked killer (that's unmasked right away) whose only goal is to kill. Freaky nods to these films and laughs at their artificiality, but it's never mockery, rather an acknowledgment of their importance in cinematic discourse. Taking these components, Landon blends it with his core theme – the lessons of a body swap, further refreshed to contemporary pop culture. What makes it distinct and worth watching is Freaky's originality – how many times before have we really seen a teenager switch bodies with a serial killer? The entire concept itself is something eccentric and outright crazy. Let's add Vaughn and Newton to the mix and we have something really freaky.

Freaky Review

Kathryn Newton, as shy Millie, shows off her comedic side. The actress known from Blockers and "Big Little Lies" has a chance to become a badass serial killer who doesn't really talk all that much. She lets her saw and a knife do all the talking. At first, Newton's Millie embodies her personality – she is a shy outsider who's constantly bullied. But as the Butcher, she suddenly becomes a strong, bold, and dangerous woman. It is fascinating to see that it takes her becoming a serial killer to finally see herself for who she truly is – an incredibly smart adolescent young woman. But sometimes we all need that kick.

At first, I didn't know what to expect from Vaughn. The Butcher has serious Michael Myers' vibes where silence is his main attribute. But once "Millie" wakes up on a stained mattress, everything changes. There is yelling, and a lot of it. The actor, who's a comedy old-timer, is not afraid of anything. He dances or runs in the most hilarious, bizarre way and has the best time with O'Connor and Osherovich, who play Millie's friends. One of the most entertaining moments is the actor expressing shock and surprise at how strong he is. Millie (in the Butcher's body) is drunk with strength and boldness. She often kicks or pushes too hard, not knowing the full extent of the serial killer's strength.

The supporting cast only further strengthens the core narrative. Each character has a specific task that must be done to defeat the Butcher. One of the funniest scenes is where Josh must keep the Butcher (as in, Millie) tied to a chair when suddenly his mom comes back home. What starts as a made-up sex role-playing game ends up a chase around the house. Drori, on the other hand, who plays Millie's sister, would be that one person I'd have a crush on if I were friends with the main character. There are plenty more scenes that are equally hilarious and just as fun. When Nyla attacks the Butcher aka Millie with kitchen appliances or when the main character, in the serial killer's body, confesses to Booker that she has a crush on him. The latter is exceptionally humorous given the circumstances – they are both squeezed in the back of the car, where Vaughn's character barely fits.

The only thing to really complain about is that Freaky could be a little bit more elaborative. I'd love to see more direct encounters between the Butcher and Millie and even more campiness and overall madness. However, the horror film still does its job and the final scene is very satisfying. There is a lot of gore, and that's one of the best parts of Freaky. The film is not scared of being bloody – to the point where you just want to squint your eyes a little bit.

In the end, Landon's latest creation is a thoroughly wild rollercoaster, packed with odd characters and great performances. It's definitely something we all need this year. It offers nostalgia and appreciation for slasher films from the past and, ultimately, is a satisfying watch for every slasher fan. It's bloodier than you can expect with gore flooding the screen. You will see lots of guts and body parts, but isn't that the ultimate goal of this particular subgenre? If you're a true fan, you're going to love every single minute of it, believe me.

Jane Austen Updated Again in 'Modern Persuasion' Official Trailer

Modern Persuasion Trailer

"What better way for me to get over my first love than to watch him fall in love with someone else…?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for a romantic comedy titled Modern Persuasion, made by actors / filmmakers Alex Appel and Jonathan Lisecki. The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen's 1817 novel "Persuasion", updated as a story about Modern Persuasion. A happily single woman focused on her career in New York is forced to deal with the aftermath of feelings about a failed relationship when "the one that got away" hires her company. The film stars Alicia Witt as Wren Cosgrove, with Bebe Neuwirth, Daniella Pineda, Liza Lapira, Mark Moses, Li Jun Li, Dominic Rains, and Shane McRae. This looks super cliche and extra schmaltzy, but it might be a fun watch with this rather spunky cast. Take a look.

Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Appel & Lisecki's Modern Persuasion, from YouTube:

Modern Persuasion Poster

A modern telling of Jane Austen's Persuasion. Wren Cosgrove (Witt) is a happy, single, and self-confessed workaholic who, after rising to the top of the corporate ladder, finds herself coming home every night to her cat. When her firm is hired by Owen Jasper, "the man who got away," long-lost feelings are stirred, giving Wren a second chance at true love. Modern Persuasion is co-directed by actors / filmmakers Alex Appel (her feature directorial debut) & Jonathan Lisecki (director of the film Gayby previously), making their first film together. The screenplay is written by Jonathan Lisecki and Barbara Radecki, adapted from Jane Austen's novel "Persuasion" first published in 1817. It's produced by Alex Appel, Amy Hobby, and Anne Hubbel. 'The Changin' Times of Ike White' Doc Film Trailer About the Musician

The Changin' Times of Ike White Trailer

"Ike was very serious about his music, and rehearsed and practiced every day." Kino Lorber has debuted an official trailer for a music documentary titled The Changin' Times of Ike White, profiling the life and times and songs of Ike White. This premiered at the Camden Film Festival and IDFA last year, and it also played at DOC NYC last fall. Ike White was a musical prodigy serving life in prison since age 19. His luck changed when he had the opportunity to record in prison the album called Changin' Times (the first ever commercial album recorded inside an American prison by an inmate - in 1976) with WAR producer Jerry Goldstein. Decades later, filmmaker Daniel Vernon tracks down White out of prison, living in obscurity, and the story takes dramatic twists. "You'll want to buy a ticket and see it before your friends discover it first and tell you about it." I am very curious to know where he went, what he's up to now, and what really happened.

Official trailer (+ poster) for Daniel Vernon's doc The Changin' Times of Ike White, from YouTube:

Meet Some Farm Animals - Official US Trailer for 'Gunda' Documentary

Gunda Trailer

"This is a film to take a bath in – it's stripped to its essential elements, without any interference." Neon has released a new official US trailer for the festival hit Gunda, an experimental documentary film made by filmmaker Viktor Kosakovskiy. This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and has stopped by numerous other fests including most recently the Montclair and New York Film Festivals. Gunda is an adorable B&W dialogue-less feature that focuses mainly on a momma pig named Gunda. Shot at ground-level to put you in the same place as the animals, the film looks at the daily life of a pig and its farm animal companions: two cows and a one-legged chicken. That's all there is to it - nothing but raw footage of these lovable animals running around all day. Executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix. And fellow filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson also loves it, providing quotes about how special it is. Meet the farm friends below.

Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Viktor Kosakovskiy's doc Gunda, direct from YouTube:

Gunda Poster

You can also watch the original promo trailer for Kosakovskiy's Gunda here, to see a bit more footage.

Where his prior film, the acclaimed epic Aquarela, was a reminder of the fragility of human tenure on earth, in Gunda, master filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky reminds us that we share our planet with billions of other animals. Through encounters with a mother sow (the eponymous "Gunda"), two ingenious cows, and a scene-stealing, one-legged chicken, Viktor Kossakovsky movingly recalibrates our moral universe, reminding us of the inherent value of life and the mystery of all animal consciousness, including our own. Gunda is directed by acclaimed Russian documentary filmmaker Viktor Kosakovskiy, director of many docs including Belovy, Quiet!, Russia from My Window, ¡Vivan las Antípodas!, Demonstration, Graine de Champion, and Aquarela previously. This first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at the New York, Hamptons, Montclair, Denver Film Festivals. Neon will debut Kosakovskiy's Gunda in "virtual cinemas" in the US for one week starting December 11th. Visit the film's official website.

Always and Forever Trailer

"Honestly, this whole thing comes as a complete shock to me." What did they do at summer camp?! RLJE Films has released the official trailer for a thriller called Always and Forever, the latest film from the director of You Got Served - Chris Stokes. This looks a bit like I Know What You Did Last Summer, but more of a suspenseful thriller than horror. After a tragedy reunites Nicole with her childhood friends, they each find themselves in danger, targets of a deranged stalker. Nicole knows this can't be a coincidence. The secrets of their past are coming back to haunt them. Starring Cynthia Addai-Robbinson as Nicole, with Robbie Jones, Lauren London, Wood Harris, Loretta Devine, Rocsi Diaz, Erica Tazel, Vanessa Curry, and Deborah Ayorinde. Not so sure this looks any good. If these kind of melodramatic "we all did something we wish we could take back" suspense films are you jam, then you'll probably enjoy this one, too.

Watch: Funny Animated Short Visualizes Socially Awkward Moments

Awkward Short Film

Well, that was awkward. Everyone knows this uncomfortable feeling. When something strange happens in public and you feel really, really awkward and just want to run away and hide. Awkward is a fun animated short film made by the very talented Ukrainian animator Nata Metlukh - it's only 3 minutes of amusing awkward animation goodness. The short presents a day full of socially awkward moments. It's made entirely by Nata, with music and sound by Daruma Audio. I dig her style and the creativity in the various scenes she features. It's just a simple animated short making fun of how awkward so much of our daily lives are, but there's some serious cathartics in watching this and laughing (while realizing I've done all these things, too).

Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this one. Very brief description from Vimeo: "A day full of socially awkward moments." Awkward is a quick short film directed & animated by filmmaker Nata Metlukh - you can view more of her art / animation on Vimeo or visit her official website. Full Trailer for 'Minor Premise' Sci-Fi About Fragmented Consciousness

Minor Premise Trailer

"I think you're gonna want to see where this goes." Utopia has debuted a full trailer for a psychological sci-fi thriller titled Minor Premise, which first premiered at the Fantasia & Sitges Film Festivals. Marking the feature debut of producer Eric Schultz, this is a "brilliantly constructed science-fiction drama that resonates with particular poignancy in our quasi-quarantined times." Attempting to surpass his own father's scientific legacy, a reclusive neuroscientist becomes entangled in his own experiment, pitting ten fragments of his consciousness against each other. Wha. "Schultz weaves a web of self-discovery with his characters revealing sincere and unvarnished portrait of a young man. Sathya Sridharan's acting prowess as Ethan makes this film a force to be reckoned with. He is dazzling, demonstrating his range and giving a unique twist to the sci-fi leading man. Unlock the puzzle that is Minor Premise and confront a plethora of fascinating questions of self and psyche." It stars Sathya Sridharan, Paton Ashbrook, and Dana Ashbrook. This looks like the modern Primer that everyone has been trying to make. Hard to pack it all into a trailer, but I'm curious.

The Mystery of D.B. Cooper Trailer

"Cooper figured it out! And he got away with it… I wanna be a Cooper." HBO has debuted an official trailer for a compelling true crime documentary titled The Mystery of D.B. Cooper, from Emmy-nominated doc filmmaker John Dower (Live Forever, My Scientology Movie). It examines the well-known case, which is largely regarded as the greatest unsolved heist in American history. In November of 1971, a man hijacked a Boeing 727 from Portland, got a $200,000 ransom, then jumped out into the wilderness with a parachute. His whereabouts or his identity have never been discovered. Drawing from a combination of recreated and archival footage, as well as exclusive interviews with those most connected to the infamous case and its likeliest culprits, this edge-of-your-seat documentary also explores how the heist inspired copycat hijackings and elevated Cooper to "legend" status. The Mystery of D.B. Cooper paints a "dynamic portrait of a fabled fugitive" whose unparalleled story became folklore. They got my attention! I'm definitely curious to find out.

An Iranian Couple Trapped in a US Hotel in Trailer for 'The Night' Film

The Night Trailer

"Did you hear that, too?" Mammoth Pictures has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie film titled The Night, made by Iranian filmmaker Kourosh Ahari. This originally premiered at the Santa Barbara Film Festival at the beginning of the year, and it screened at the Fajr, Sitges, Cinequest, and Nightstream Film Festivals. This unsettling horror is about an Iranian couple living in the US that becomes trapped inside a hotel when insidious events force them to face the secrets that have come between them. It becomes a night that never ends. Starring Shahab Hosseini, Leah Oganyan, Niousha Jafarian, George Maguire, and Gia Mora. This looks like it's inspired quite a bit by The Shining, playing on cultural differences and using the freakiness of a US hotel to seriously scare this couple. And it certainly does look freaky and unsettling.

Head Back to 1930s in New Trailer for 'Ip Man: Kung Fu Master' Film

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master Trailer

"Some people use it to fight and kill. Some people use it for self-improvement. And as for me, I use it for justice." Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official US trailer for yet another Ip Man movie, this one titled Ip Man: Kung Fu Master. This martial arts extravaganza stars Donnie To as the Ip Man, Bruce Lee's legendary kung fu tutor, his third time playing this role (including The Legend Is Born: Ip Man in 2010 and Kung Fu League in 2018). This film isn't connected to the Donnie Yen series of Ip Man films, most recently with Ip Man 4: The Finale just last year. Set before the Communist Revolution in 1949, during his time as a police captain in Foshan, Ip Man is targeted by a vengeful gangster just as the Japanese army invades the region. The film's cast also features Michael Wong, Wanliruo Xin, and Dongfeng Yue. All the fights look badass, of course, as expected. And the story is a good twist on the usual - just hope it's not a big mess.

This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, but still doesn't even have a US distributor setup yet. Did These Women Kill Kim Jong-un's Brother? Trailer for 'Assassins'

Assassins Trailer

"Yeah I just did that, so what?" Greenwich Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Assassins, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film is an account of two women convicted of assassinating Kim Jong-un's half-brother, Kim Jong-nam. The film follows the women's trials in an attempt to understand whether they are trained killers or simply pawns. The spectacularly brazen murder happened in broad daylight, filmed entirely by security cameras. Footage shows them covering his eyes with their hands, and pressing VX—the most lethal nerve gas—into his eyes. He stumbled away and was dead within an hour. But if the murder was extreme, the story that came next was even more bizarre: The two women who killed Jong-nam claimed they had simply been hired to pull a video prank and had no idea what they were really doing. Was their outlandish story actually the truth? And would anyone believe them? That's what this film ponders from every angle. And damn does it look riveting.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Ryan White's doc Assassins, direct from Greenwich's YouTube:

Assassins Doc Poster

The audacious murder in early 2017 of the brother of North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un in a crowded Malaysian airport sparked a worldwide media frenzy. At the center of the investigation are two young women who are either cold-blooded killers or unwitting pawns in a brazen political assassination. Assassins goes beyond the headlines to question every angle of this case, from human trafficking to geo-political espionage to the secretive dynamics of the North Korean dynasty. Assassins is directed by Emmy-nominated doc producer / filmmaker Ryan White, director of the doc films Pelada, Good Ol' Freda, The Case Against 8, Serena, and Ask Dr. Ruth previously. Produced by Jessica Hargrave and Ryan White. This first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Greenwich Ent. will release White's Assassins doc in select US theaters + "virtual cinemas" starting on December 11th coming soon. So who's intrigued?

The Power of Movement Trailer

"It's really about global healing - not just benefiting you scientifically, physically…" Freestyle Digital has debuted a trailer for an indie documentary titled The Power of Movement, which is launching on VOD this month for those curious to learn more. This sounds totally kooky and absurd as a healing technique, and it is, but it also isn't. The underlying concerns – that we lack physical activity and movement to sustain healthy bodies – is accurate and legit, but we all know dance isn't going to cure cancer. The film, profiling Dr. Niraj Mehta, is described as a "fun doc that spotlights a Bollywood choreographer who also happens to be an oncologist, who uses his dance therapy to treat patients." I'm glad it is such a lighthearted and fun film, because taking this too seriously would just make everyone's eyes roll. But dance is wonderful! And we all need to dance more anymore. Maybe there really is some power in movement? Only one way to find out…

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Aaron M. Abelto's doc The Power of Movement, from YouTube:
