Some intrepid fan has cut together all of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailers into one “mega-trailer.” The runtime of this supercut from a galaxy far, far away is 3:40. I don’t mean to downplay the hard work performed by Science vs. Cinema, the makers of the video. It’s a lot of hard work and as you can see below, the trailer flows very well:
But there’s something impressive about how little we’ve seen from The Force Awakens. As we saw last week, the buzz for this film is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. It killed the Internet’s movie ticket purveyors at one point. We are this excited about something that we know very little about to this point. Of course, there’s no accounting for legacy. And if Star Wars has anything, it’s a long and rich legacy of being very popular among humans.
It’s an interesting case study, though, in the minimalist marketing that comes along with J.J. Abrams and his mystery box. In contrast, let’s recall what Sony Pictures did with The Amazing Spider-Man. Remember when our old friend Sleepy Skunk cut together a 25-minute version of the entire movie based on trailers and marketing clips? Looking back at that 25-minutes now, it’s easy to say that it was way too much.
The contrast is staggering. Less than 4-minutes of footage exists in the wild for The Force Awakens. While we can guess at spoilers and talk about rumors, we really don’t know anything about the new Star Wars movie. And that’s how it should be. The excitement is incredible and there is plenty of room left for J.J. Abrams and crew to surprise us when the movie hits theaters on December 18.
