It’s really the gravelly voice of Ralph Ineson, who you’ll recognize from the Harry Potter movies or perhaps even Guardians of the Galaxy, that will get you. This trailer for The Witch is about as haunting as the movie itself, if all the glowing reviews from its various festival appearances are to be believed. Here’s what our own Rob Hunter had to say in his review from Sundance:
It’s safe to say that writer/director Robert Eggers‘ feature debut, The Witch, giveth no shites about your genre expectations. The film is a powerful slow burn dripping in period detail, dialogue authenticity and atmospheric dread, and while it moves at its own pace the end result is like a Halloween-themed episode of Little House on the Prairie by way of Ben Wheatley’s Kill List.
Yeah, that sounds pretty gnarly. The trailer isn’t making it any less terrifying, either.
The Witch will be released by A24 in 2016. Until then, try going to sleep every night with the sound of that goat in your head. Good luck.
