Spectre Trailer: Why Does The New James Bond Seem Like An Unbreakable Remake?

As pointed out in Neil’s list of stuff we watched while FSR was imploding, the Spectre trailer hit while we were down. And I agree with Neil that it looks so good. But it also reminded me a lot of another movie: Unbreakable. “It was me, James, the author of all your pain,” says Christoph Waltz as the new Bond villain, Franz Oberhauser. Sounds a bit like Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) at the end of M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero thriller saying, “I found you. So many sacrifices, just to find you.”

Or, maybe he’s just the usual bad guy in the background, linked to so much of what we’ve seen previously. He’s like Thanos. Or, yes, Blofeld. “You came across me so many times, yet you never saw me,” he says in the new sequel, hopefully then accompanied by a montage of every past scene that he was hiding in, like the suicide girl bit from The Rules of Attraction. Oberhauser just can’t live, if living is without 007. Or it’ll just be a clip reel from Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall where we’re pointed to various extras now retconned as having been Oberhauser in disguise all along.

Some of the other main characters we meet in Spectre also have special links to James Bond (Daniel Craig). Blue is the Warmest Color‘s Lea Seydoux plays a woman named Madeleine Swann, who (while also possibly a distant relative of Elizabeth Swann from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, because everything is connected, you know) is the daughter of the villain Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), who we haven’t seen since Quantum of Solace. And the other female lead, played by Monica Bellucci, is the widow of another bad guy, one we seem to meet for the first time in the new movie (maybe played by Alessandro Cremona). I think she’s also the girl from Monsters Inc. all grown up.

Spectre opens just about everywhere on November 6th, except for the UK and Ireland, who get it a week earlier. While we wait, here’s a silly new 1960s style trailer of the Bond reboot version of Casino Royale:
