Addicted to Fresno Trailer: Because You All Want More Judy Greer

I’m not sharing this trailer because we’ve reviewed the movie or because I personally think it looks great (it looks okay). I’m sharing it because everyone is complaining about Judy Greer getting the shaft in movies lately. Well, here she is. Greer may be a sidelined mom in Ant-Man and Jurassic World, but she’s in a whole bunch of movies this year, plus the second season of Married, which debuted on FX last Thursday. And here, in Addicted to Fresno (previously just known as Fresno), she’s the lead.

Or, at least the co-lead, though the trailer does make it seem that Greer plays a slightly bigger character than Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black). The two are sisters, both of them working as maids at a hotel when Greer’s character accidentally kills a guy and they try to cover it up. Greer is also playing a sex addict, while Lyonne plays a lesbian. I don’t know if those role definers are that notable, yet the former label is mentioned in the trailer and both are included in the official synopsis.

Addicted to Fresno received mixed reviews at SXSW this year, so it’s not a definite matter than Greer is at least making good money in those minor parts in studio blockbusters so she can shine in great indies. Regardless of whether this movie is great or not, though, if you an appreciation for Greer’s talents then this looks worthwhile to that degree. Plus it has a terrific supporting ensemble, including Aubrey Plaza, Clea DuVall, Allison Tollman, Ron Livingston and Fred Armisen. Molly Shannon is in it, too.

The movie reunites Lyonne with her But I’m a Cheerleader director, Jamie Babbit. That underrated but increasingly dated LGBT comedy was made as the actress was on the rise, before her unfortunate legal and health problems last decade. It’s great to see them working together now that Lyonne has made a comeback. Babbit has also worked with Greer on episodes of Married, so I suspect there is good chemistry all around here.

Addicted to Fresno hits VOD on September 1st then opens in theaters on October 2nd.
