Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.
The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — January 2020 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.
Amazon Prime Pick of the Month
When you talk about director Jospeh Ruben the odds are movies like Dreamscape (1984), The Stepfather (1987), Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), The Good Son (1993), and Money Train (1995) are the ones being discussed, but while he made his bones with thrillers he’s also the filmmaker behind 1976’s The Pom Pom Girls. If it sounds like a dirty movie, well, that was the intent of this slice of teensploitation. It’s basically just a series of vignettes in the lives of carefree California high-schoolers (including a young Robert Carradine eight years before he’d go to college with Revenge of the Nerds) who are all having fun, getting laid, playing pranks on rival schools, and more. Boobs, butts, and a few f-bombs grace the screen despite the PG-rating — an earlier R-rated cut exists but this is listed as the PG one — but it’s mostly a casually entertaining look at days gone by.
The Director of Hereditary Made Another Cult Movie!
Ari Aster’s Hereditary (2018) remains a creepy, fun, go for broke slice of horror brilliance, but while his follow-up felt like a let down to me it appears I’m in the minority. Midsommar (2019) welcomes you into its fold on January 3rd and follows a group of friends who stumble their way into a cult’s embrace with deadly outcomes. It’s funny, but it’s also dumb? Anyway, judge its brightly lit descent into hell for yourself.
Stand-Up Shenanigans
I’ve never been the biggest fan of stand up comedy. There are exceptions, from Mitch Heder to Ali Wong, but for the most part stand-up just doesn’t work for me. Two new specials are hitting Prime this month, and as a fan of both these talents I’m hoping they buck the trend. First up is Ilana Glazer: The Planet Is Burning which lands on January 3rd, and then two weeks later we get Rob Delaney: Jackie which premieres on January 17th. Both Glazer and Delaney are very funny performers and writers, so my fingers and funny bones are crossed.
