It’s been 42 years and nine films since Star Wars first graced the big screen. Three trilogies, separated by decades, have all followed the course of a single great battle between the Light and the Dark. Although Disney has further plans for the Star Wars universe, this December, the Skywalker Saga comes to its conclusion with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
This week, on what would have been Carrie Fisher’s 63rd birthday, the studio released the sequel’s final trailer. Watch:
This spot does not shy away from the nostalgia beats. Amongst the space battles, lightsaber duels in inconvenient elements, Jedi parkour, and original trilogy cameos, there is a lot of Star Wars to unpack. Let’s dive into the details.
A speeder helmet is dropped (it looks a lot like the one Leia wore on the Forest Moon of Endor in Return of the Jedi) on the ground of a jungle planet, and Rey (Daisy Ridley) is seen running and leaping while being shot at by some kind of blaster. It looks like the training droid that Obi-Wan used in A New Hope to help Luke (Mark Hamill) attune with his Force senses.
Despite the death of her mentor Luke in The Last Jedi, Rey seems to be continuing her Jedi training.
Which she will clearly put to good use. Rey continues her penchant for climbing around in unlikely places. This looks to be the wreckage of the Death Star glimpsed in the April teaser.
Meanwhile, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) seems to be taking the leadership lessons he learned in The Last Jedi to heart. After the Rebellion was decimated by the First Order, he appears to be rallying as many people as he can to their cause. Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) is sitting front and center for that speech.
In the first teaser for the film, Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious’ (Ian McDiarmid) unmistakable evil laughter revealed the return of the villain from the first two trilogies. It also showed the unmistakable wreckage of the Death Star on the surface of a planet/moon called Kijimi, where it seems he has been hiding out.
Rey is seen standing on the submerged wreckage of that same vessel. How so much of the Death Star survived being seemingly vaporized is unclear.
