It’s fair to say that the Terminator franchise has experienced its fair share of ups and downs. The first two movies are widely regarded as sci-fi action masterpieces, but since then, the series has been a huge mess. After the 2015 reboot Terminator Genisys failed to generate any excitement for a new trilogy, James Cameron decided to ignore every movie that happened after Terminator 2: Judgment Day and retcon the series. Enter Terminator: Dark Fate, the franchise’s last hope at salvation.
Produced by Cameron and directed by Tim Miller, the latest installment sees Linda Hamilton‘s Sarah Connor return to the fold for the first time since the original sequel. In that movie, she was a key player in preventing the apocalypse, having stopped the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) from killing her son — and mankind’s future savior — John Connor (Edward Furlong, who reprises his role in this movie). Well, now it looks like she’s going to have to do it all over again because the machines are back, and they have an appetite for destruction.
Dark Fate takes place 27 years after the events of Judgment Day. As it turns out, Sarah and co. didn’t really stop the catastrophic event from happening — they merely delayed it. As the trailer shows, there’s a new harbinger of doom in the form of a Terminator played by Gabriel Luna — and he looks unstoppable. Of course, with this being a modern-day Terminator movie, there are things in this trailer that don’t make sense. With this in mind, let’s take a look at it and try to figure out what the hell is going on here.
The trailer opens with Sarah and Grace (Mackenzie Davis) meeting for the first time. It’s not under the most civil of circumstances, though, as Sarah points a gun in her face and asks who she is. Grace responds by disarming Sarah and pushing her into a wall. From the get-go, it’s clear that Grace has been in dangerous situations before and knows how to take care of herself when confronted by an armed adversary.
Here, Sarah’s narration reintroduces her as the hero who saved three billion lives and stopped Judgment Day from happening. At least for a while anyway…
Cut to a beach full of skulls and bones as the machines rise from the ocean. There’s no telling if this scene takes place in the past, present, or future, but it doesn’t look good for mankind, regardless of when it occurs.
We then cut to a montage of Sarah’s newfound alliance with Grace and Dani (Natalia Reyes). War is coming, but these three badasses aren’t about to let humanity perish without a fight.
