Remembering Tom Petty’s Tunes On Screen

Rock stars are rock stars no matter the situation.

The late legend Tom Petty didn’t just run the stage. His numerous cameos and characters in film and TV were almost always scene-stealers, but the use of his music was always scene-defining. Americana grounds the film and TV it appears in and Petty’s warble takes things subterranean.

There’s dark weirdness and hope in every tune, adding irony or emphasis to the activities on screen. Nelson Carvajal’s memorial video highlights just a few of the more famous instances of Petty’s soundtrack appearances, stringing together a showcase of the power his music can bring to the screen.
