Exploring in the Afterlife in Movies

By Kieran Fisher

What happens to us when we die?

Are we destined to fly with the angels or perish in the flames? Maybe we become restless ghosts? Perhaps there’s another spiritual plane? Or nothing at all? These questions have kept us, humans, pondering for centuries, but we’ll never truly know the definitive answer until we’ve checked out ourselves.

In Niels Arden Oplev’s new Flatliners movie, we meet a group of medical students keen to find out what happens when the lights go out (minus the trouble of dying permanently). However, movies have regularly questioned what comes afterward and even provided unique interpretations of what that might entail.

Vimeo user Brutzelpretzel has created a collage of the different variations of the afterlife depicted in cinema. From heaven to hell, limbo, and the fictional netherworlds in between, it shows how movies have explored the subject in unique and interesting ways. Should some of these be similar to the actual afterlife, maybe death won’t be so bad after all.
