Total Film released some new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice plot details as well as a handful of new set photos. While the photos don’t reveal anything wildly new, the plot details give us some more insight into what exactly fuels Batman’s hatred towards Superman.
Man of Steel star Henry Cavill spoke with Total Film about the movie’s prologue that will deal with Wayne’s attempt to save those in the Wayne Enterprises building during the final showdown between Superman and General Zod that was seen at the end of Man of Steel and now teased in the most recent Batman v Superman trailer.
“What happens there is one of Bruce’s buildings gets destroyed and he’s trying to save all the people inside the building and he can’t,” explains Cavill. “So he is this angry person who fears what Superman may do. Why are they just going to trust this super-powered alien? What if he does decide to turn against us?”
Ben Affleck further explained Bruce’s anger, saying “He’s found himself in a place of harboring a tremendous amount of rage for Superman. So it’s how he got there, and what that’s done to him, and what that’s done to people around him like Alfred, who are, I think, very scared and worried for him. It’s something that’s interesting and new.”
Affleck also went on to field a question about his solo Batman project that’s in development. “If I could make it work, yeah, obviously that would be like a dream. The trick is, as to any movie, is to make sure that you – if you’re going to direct it – that you can make it good. You’ve got to have the right idea and the right take on it. Broadly speaking, it’s something I’d be open to, for sure. It’s a very exciting idea.”
Interestingly enough, an additional project that Batman is rumored to be involved in, according to CinemaBlend, is Warner Bros. Wonder Woman film, slated to be released sometime before the planned Justice League film due at the end of 2017. While it’s apparently a small role, Batman’s appearance in Wonder Woman will actually be the reason she appears in Batman v Superman. The events in Wonder Woman will chronologically take place before BvS, setting up the connection between the two superheroes.
If these rumors are true, it’s clear that Warner Bros. is establishing Batman as the centerpiece and focus of the planned DC lineup of movies. Affleck’s Batman is getting a ton of attention and the actor/character has a busy schedule ahead, being involved in BvS, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League, and then Affleck’s solo Batman project. It’s undeniable Batman is the most popular superhero in DC’s universe next to Superman, but the motive behind Warner Bros. deliberately involving him in each of their planned films remains unclear. Hopefully we get to see it all come together with time and as each film gets released.
