The Magical Mystery of the McConaissance

From romantic leading dud to Oscar-Winner.

By now nearly everyone knows about the McConnaissance, the term given to the curious trajectory of actor Matthew McConaughey’s career, which has seen him go from loveable stoner to chisel-chested romantic lead, to full-blown A-list top-caliber actor with an Oscar to his name (for Dallas Buyers Club).

But have you ever asked yourself, “How the hell did this happen? How did a guy who peaked with EdTV (you know it’s true) come back from the pop-cultural grave to reach heights all actors dream of but only a handful reach?” Cary Grant doesn’t have a Best Actor Oscar, for fuck’s sake. It’s true McConaughey has turned in some outstanding work in the last five years – besides Dallas, Interstellar, Mud, Killer Joe, The Paperboy, The Lincoln Lawyer, his cameo in The Wolf of Wall Street – but I think if most of us are honest with ourselves, we’ll admit we kinda didn’t see it coming.

So if you have ever wondered how it went down, lucky for you our esteemed friend Jacob T. Swinney has made the following video for Fandor tracing the perplexing ascent of Mr. Alright-Alright-Alright to the zenith of his profession. It’s an uplifting story of a loveable underdog made good that feels like, well, a Matthew McConaughey movie.
