From the director who brought you Natalie Portman going crazy in ‘Black Swan’ comes Jennifer Lawrence going crazy in ‘mother!’
In this first trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s mother! we are presented with several big ideas. One is that Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem are supposed to be a believable, happily married couple living a tranquil existence in a fairly spooky country home.
Question #1: Are we really supposed to believe that J-Law and Anton Chigurh are husband and wife?
Forgive me if I find bleeding light bulbs to be more realistic.
The next big idea is that Ed Harris and Michelle Pfieffer show up as a couple of sexy strangers who have a curious interest in Bardem’s character and bring with them a bunch of creepy occurrences. Okay, that I believe.
Question #2: What is Darren Aronofsky’s obsession with women being driven mad?
Requiem and Black Swan are cited in the trailer, for good reason. Aronofsky has made a cottage industry out of the madness of women in his movies. It’s always fascinating and despite the aforementioned weird coupling of Lawrence and Bardem, I’m here for the madness.
Question #3: Are harsh violin chords ever not creepy?
