Rogue One Toys Short Film

Disney has launched a fun short film for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story that is actually a commercial for the new toys and collectibles from this upcoming spin-off movie. Some have described it as similar to "Robot Chicken", with various action figures and toys and Lego minifigs being animated with stop-motion and other trickery in an adventure to steal the Death Star plans - just like the movie! No surprise there. The focus is on the badass new hero, Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones in the film. Director Krennic, played by Ben Mendelsohn, also makes an appearance as does the new droid K-2SO. New Trailer for WWII Movie 'USS Indianapolis' Starring Nicolas Cage

USS Indianapolis Trailer

"This is a damn suicide mission…" "Full speed ahead." A new international trailer has debuted for the film USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage, about the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II. Nicolas Cage stars as Captain Charles B. McVay, who was court-mailed for "failing to zigzag" as the Captain of this ship, then exonerated more than half a century later. The full cast includes Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter, Weronika Rosati, Brian Presley and others. This trailer is extensive and explains most of the story, including attempting to survive in shark-infested waters after sinking. You can still see the first trailer here for something shorter, otherwise dive in to this epic, full 3 minute trailer below.

Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Mario Van Peebles's USS Indianapolis, direct from YouTube:

Watch: New US Trailer for Paul Verhoeven's 'Elle' with Isabelle Huppert

Paul Verhoeven's Elle

"Nutjobs, I can handle. My specialty." Sony Classics has debuted an official US trailer for Paul Verhoeven's latest film, a shocking but remarkable thriller called Elle, starring French actress Isabelle Huppert as the head of a video game company. The plot, and I'm not even exaggerating, involves her being raped in her own home by a masked intruder. She tries to figure out who it was and hunt him down, in return, and teach him a lesson. Also featuring Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Charles Berling, Virginie Efira, Judith Magre and Christian Berkel. I saw this film at the Cannes Film Festival when it first premiered and it's fantastic - dark and devious and kind of messed up, but actually really fun and funny. Huppert is totally amazing and kicks ass in this role. It's sure to spark some controversy, but it's also a damn fine film. Enjoy.

Here's the official US trailer (+ international poster) for Paul Verhoeven's Elle, originally from Yahoo:

Paul Verhoeven's Elle

Michèle (Huppert) seems indestructible. Head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle's life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game – a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control. Elle is directed by Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, of The 4th Man, RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Starship Troopers, Hollow Man, Black Book and Tricked previously. The screenplay is written by David Birke, based on the novel by Philippe Djian. The film first premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Sony Classics will release Verhoeven's Elle in select US theaters starting October 14th this fall. Thoughts?

First Trailer for Thriller 'Shut In' with Naomi Watts & Jacob Tremblay

Shut In Trailer

"Something's going on and it's not just in my head, I can prove it!" EuropaCorp has released the first trailer for a new thriller titled Shut In, from director Farren Blackburn. The film stars Naomi Watts as a child psychologist who moves to a big house in the middle of rural New England with her new foster care child, played by Jacob Tremblay (of last year's film Room), along with her other brain dead son. While at first she seems threatened by him, it turns out they're both being haunted by a "bad guy trying to kill them". Oh boy, watch out. This trailer reveals quite a bit of twists, including that it might be a supernatural thriller of sorts. Also starring Charlie Heaton, Oliver Platt, David Cubitt and Crystal Balint. Take a look below.

Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Farren Blackburn's Shut In, originally from USA Today:

Trailer for Documentary 'Silicon Cowboys' Telling the Story of Compaq

Silicon Cowboys Trailer

"Enjoy it while you can, because IBM's gunna have a portable and then it's sayonara." As a computer nerd, it's always fun to see documentaries that explore the history of computers. Silicon Cowboys tell the story of the rise and fall of Compaq Computers. Launched in 1981 by three friends in Houston, they wanted to challenge IBM's dominance over the personal computer market and were mostly successful. That is, until IBM decided to fight back. Everyone knows the name Compaq, but do you know the real story behind them? This looks like a fascinating and captivating doc not only about computers but about the cutthroat business world that is still prevalent today. That quote about "the way you were supposed to deal with IBM" sold me.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Jason Cohen's doc Silicon Cowboys, direct from YouTube:

Silicon Cowboys Poster

Three friends dream up the Compaq portable computer at a Texas diner in 1981, and soon find themselves battling mighty IBM, for PC supremacy. Their improbable journey altered the future of computing and shaped the world we now know. Silicon Cowboys is directed by filmmaker Jason Cohen, of the Oscar nominated short doc Facing Fear previously. The doc "explores the remarkable David vs. Goliath story, and eventual demise, of Compaq, an unlikely upstart who altered the future of computing." The film premiered at this year's SXSW Film Festival and played at a few other fests. FilmRise will release Silicon Cowboys in select theaters + on VOD starting September 16th coming up. Thomas Haden Church & Terrence Howard in 'Cardboard Boxer' Trailer

Cardboard Boxer Trailer

"I wish someone would see me, just to know I am here…" Well Go USA has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Cardboard Boxer, starring Thomas Haden Church as a homeless man struggling to make ends meet. He's coerced by two teens to fight other men for cash, but obviously doesn't like doing so, and just wants to get away from his life on the streets. The cast includes Terrence Howard, Boyd Holbrook, and Macy Gray. The official description calls the film an "unflinching look at the lives of the displaced and forgotten members of society." This looks very powerful and heartbreaking, and even though Thomas Haden Church is almost hard to look at, he seems to be giving an earnest performance. This is worth a quick watch.

Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Knate Lee's Cardboard Boxer, in high def from Apple:

Cardboard Boxer Poster

Willie (Thomas Haden Church), homeless and on skid row, is coerced by two teens to fight other men for cash. Now involved in a violent world he can't understand and with few human connections beyond a girl's diary he found, Willie struggles to find a way out. The Greasy Strangler - Trailer

  The Greasy Strangler - Trailer
This Los Angeles–set tale follows Big Ronnie, a man who runs a disco walking tour along with his browbeaten son, Brayden. When a sexy, alluring woman named Janet comes to take the tour, it begins a competition between father and son for her attentions. It also brings about the appearance of an oily, slimy, inhuman maniac who stalks the streets at night and strangles the innocent—soon dubbed “the Greasy Strangler.” Flush your expectations down the toilet, because you have never seen a slasher film or a father-son comedy like this before. Director Jim Hosking makes his feature debut in this outrageously off-kilter film that is equal parts disgusting, offensive, and manically entertaining.
Directed by: Jim Hosking
Starring: Michael St. Michaels, Sky Elobar, Elizabeth de Razzo

Zombies, VHS Games, Heists & Thrills at Germany's Fantasy Filmfest

Germany's Fantasy Filmfest

Over the past week and a half I've been attending a few screenings of films as part of the Fantasy Filmfest in Berlin (where I now live). Inspired by and operated similar to Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX and Fantasia in Montreal, the Fantasy Filmfest is a horror/sci-fi/genre festival in Germany (taking place in multiple cities over these past few weeks). Their catchy tagline is "Fear Good Movies" and their line-up of films this year is impressive, including some of my favorites from other fests like: Swiss Army Man, Under the Shadow, Train to Busan, Yoga Hosers, and War on Everyone. I caught four films over the last few weeks, two of them worth recommending. Overall, I'm glad I heard about this fest (from a fellow movie lover in Germany) - I always enjoy seeing some of the latest genre films, especially since there's so many out there every year.

This is the 30th year of the Fantasy Filmfest, which first launched in 1987 in Germany. From the program's introduction: "Over time, a lot of genre classics were discovered here, some of them becoming cult favo- rites. Our audience has spent many days and many more hours of joy and suffering together, laughing, screaming and celebrating their favorite kinds of film." The screenings always started on time, most of them were in English (not dubbed), and overall everything ran smooth. For more details check out their website. I decided to write up some quick capsule reviews of the four films I saw during the festival - find them below.

The Girl with All the Gifts

The Girl with All the Gifts (directed by Colm McCarthy) - This is the best zombie movie in years, hands down. I often feel like I'm tired of seeing the same old zombie movie, but this one is different, and it's refreshingly unique and bold in its originality. This is a big step forward in zombie movies, by telling a story about "what happens next" after they've taken over - not about that event. It's about a young girl (played by Sennia Nanua who definitely deserves attention after this) who is a zombie, but seems immune or at least has the ability to be human for the most part. They're trying to figure out how to create a vaccine, until that facility gets overrun. The movie is intense and vibrant, the script is streamlined and moves swiftly without providing all the answers, but still keeps you engaged. There's plenty of biting and blood, but there's also good twists and turns. I actually prefer this zombie flick more than Train to Busan, which others are raving about. Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, Gemma Arterton also star, but it's all about Sennia Nanua.

To Steal from a Thief (directed by Daniel Calparsoro) - A bank robbery heist movie from Spain in the same vein as Inside Man. This one starts out great, but then ends up being fairly forgettable. There is not much of a setup - within minutes the masked robbers are storming into the bank in Valencia, and they have an intricate plan in place designed to fool everyone (including the police) and escape with sensitive data from a safety deposit box. However, heavy rain outside floods their escape route and they have to figure out a flimsy backup plan. One of the biggest problems is that it never feels like the threat of these robbers is real, there are no stakes, perhaps because of a budget issue or perhaps because the script isn't that strong. I really wanted to enjoy this one more than I did, but by the end I was just waiting for it to be over and the conclusion isn't that satisfying anyway. I recommend just rewatching Inside Man instead.

Desierto (directed by Jonás Cuarón) - A cat-and-mouse thriller set on the US-Mexico border (which we also reviewed last year). Gael García Bernal plays a kind-hearted Mexican man trying to cross the border and get back safely to his family, Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays a heartless vigilante American who likes to hunt down illegal border crossers and kill them. This film seemed like Jonás Cuarón's attempt to prove that he is capable of making a feature film, and otherwise doesn't really add much to the discussion nor is it very memorable in any way. Cuarón (son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón) does indeed prove that he is a talented filmmaker and can tell a story, there's just nothing about this that stands out. We already know most of these people crossing are just seeking a better life, and we already know there are shitty Americans who will angrily kill them. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has a dog which he uses to actually kill a few of them, but I could tell the dog was very friendly in real life, and it was quite distracting. Solid filmmaking, boring film.

Beyond the Gates (directed by Jackson Stewart) - Now this is a fun one especially for fans of B-movie horror. This low-budget throwback to the days of VHS is about two brothers who find an old VHS horror board game (called "Beyond the Gates") while cleaning up their dad's video store. 80's horror icon Barbara Crampton appears on screen when they pop in the VHS, but they soon discover the game involves actually killing people in the real-world to progress. It's goofy, rather harmless, and super low-budget (not in a good way), but I still enjoyed it. I wish there was more gore, and the dynamic between the three leads (Graham Skipper, Chase Williamson, Brea Grant) is a bit cheesy, but there's a charming old school vibe to it that makes up for some of its flaws. This will definitely make you want to bust out your old VHS movies and find a working VHS player at the local flea market and relive the good ole days of cinema on tape.

Beyond the Gates

The two of these that I would recommend seeing are The Girl with All the Gifts and Beyond the Gates. If you live in Germany (or are visiting the country while the fest is taking place) and love genre films (horror, sci-fi, thrillers) then make sure you check out the Fantasy Filmfest. The films screen on different days in all of the major cities in the country: Berlin, Munich, Nürnberg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart, and Hamburg. I'm already looking forward to seeing what they bring next year, as there is bound to be something good to see that I haven't caught up with yet. Other films playing this year include: Abattoir, Antibirth, Carnage Park, Creepy, Don't Kill It, The Eyes of My Mother, The Greasy Strangler, Imperium, Level Up, The Ones Below, Shelley, Terra Formars, Trash Fire, and We Are the Flesh. For more info, visit the festival's official website.

James Cameron's 'Terminator 2' in 3D Will Arrive in Theaters in 2017

Terminator 2 3D

"The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it, for the first time, with a sense of hope. Because if a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too." Get ready for the return of the Terminator movie we all love. James Cameron's 1991 sci-fi classic Terminator 2: Judgement Day is being re-released in theaters in 2017 in 3D. The Facebook page for the T2 movie confirmed and released a poster to go along with the news. If, like me, you went to one of the Universal Studios theme parks as a kid you probably fondly remember the Terminator 2 ride in 3D (called "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time"), pretty much the best use of 3D up until Cameron gave us Avatar. Here's to hoping this 3D conversion is as good.

Here's the poster for Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 3D in 2017 officially released to announce the news:

Terminator 2 3D Poster

The announcement on Facebook included this great line: "August 29th 1997: The day Skynet first became self aware. August 29th 2016: the day you first saw the brand new poster for Terminator 2 in 3D. Coming to theaters in 2017." James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgement Day was first released in theaters in July of 1991. An IMAX version of the film was released earlier this year. Linda Hamilton stars as Sarah Connor, with Arnold Schwarzenegger returning as The Terminator, plus Edward Furlong as John Connor, and Robert Patrick as the T-1000. No other details were announced yet, including who is responsible for the 3D conversion and if Cameron is involved. We also don't know the exact date in 2017 it will arrive, but we'll keep you updated once info is available. The top image is from the T2 3-D ride in Florida. Going to see this?

Second Trailer for Rob Zombie's Evil Carnival Game Horror Movie '31'

31 Horror Movie

"Nightmarish on every level." If you already hate carnivals, you might want to stay away from this. Saban Films has released a second trailer for Rob Zombie's latest horror feature, titled 31, about an evil carnival, twisted game. Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in a "Hell-like" compound where they must survive for 12 hours against a gang of sadistic clowns to escape alive. Starring Sheri Moon Zombie (of course), Malcolm McDowell, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Torsten Voges, Sandra Rosko, and Meg Foster. I can't even tell what's going on in half of this trailer, way too many close-ups and it's over-edited. But if you dig Zombie's messed up horror flicks, then have at it.

Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Rob Zombie's latest film 31, direct from YouTube:

Rob Zombie's 31 Poster

You can also still watch the first trailer for Rob Zombie's 31 here, for even more footage from this.

For the next 12 hours they must fight for their lives against an endless parade of homicidal maniacs. 31 is both written and directed by filmmaker Rob Zombie, of House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, Halloween, Halloween II and The Lords of Salem previously. New UK Trailer for Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Scary Neighbor Thriller 'Creepy'

Creepy Trailer

"When the two connect, the true terror begins." Eureka Entertainment has debuted an official (subtitled) trailer for the Japanese horror-thriller Creepy, which has been playing the film festival circuit all year so far. The latest from filmmaker Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the film is about an ex-detective and criminal psychologist who discovers that his new neighbor isn't quite who he says he is. The cast includes Hidetoshi Nishijima, Teruyuki Kagawa, Yüko Takeuchi, Haruna Kawaguchi, and Masahiro Higashide. Not only has it played at numerous fests, but the film has received some great reviews so far. One review on ScreenAnarchy says "it's an example of a master attempting a new direction -- in the form of a good, old-fashioned, bloody, spirited thriller." This definitely does look creepy. That guy's smile is the freakiest part about it. Have a look.

Here's the official UK trailer for Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Creepy, direct from Eureka's YouTube:

My Scientology Movie - Trailer

  My Scientology Movie - Trailer
"I find that the most inexplicable behavior is motivated by very relatable human impulses," comments Louis Theroux as he heads to Los Angeles for his feature documentary, in collaboration with director John Dower and double Academy Award-winning producer Simon Chinn, exploring the Church of Scientology. Following a long fascination with the religion and with much experience in dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behavior, the beguilingly unassuming Theroux won't take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church's headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church's use of filming techniques, and aided by ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to replay some incidents people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about Louis Theroux. Suffused with a good dose of humor and moments worthy of a Hollywood script, MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE is stranger than fiction.
Directed by: John Dower
Starring: Rob Alter, Tom Cruise, Paz de la Huerta
