Watch: Tim Miller's 'DC Universe' Short That Landed Him 'Deadpool'

Tim Miller's DC Universe Short

"Pick on someone your own size!" Everyone is talking about the insane success of Deadpool last weekend - breaking box office records and earning the appreciate of audiences. The movie is directed by a first-time filmmaker named Tim Miller, who co-founded a VFX house called Blur Studios in 1995, and has often worked with David Fincher (e.g. on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opening titles). Miller got the offer to direct Deadpool thanks to a cinematic short made for the DC Universe Online game that impressed an exec at 20th Century Fox. The short features various DC superheroes/supervillains like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and Joker fighting it out. The film is viewable below to see what it was that got him the job.

In an interview with Time Out Dubai (via SlashFilm), Miller explains how this cinematic short film got him the Deadpool job: "The executive at Fox who'd been working on X-Men: First Class with Matthew Vaughn had seen a piece I'd done for a DC Universe project, which had a lot of superhero action… He came down and we met, and by the end of that meeting he said, 'You know, I think you should really be directing your own film. You're a first-timer so I can’t get you on anything big, but we have this other movie… Deadpool. Are you interested?' I'd read the script already and I thought it was great, so I jumped at the chance." That was it. He says there were a few more hurdles to jump through, but the rest is now record-breaking history.
