Another day, another remake. We've been reporting on this remake for 9 years, ever since rumors began in 2007. James Cameron has been behind a remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic Fantastic Voyage for years and years. THR is now reporting that Guillermo del Toro is in talks to develop and direct the Fantastic Voyage remake for Fox, developing through Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment. There isn't much else to add beyond that, as the movie doesn't even have a date yet so things are still coming together. Which has been the case every time a director starts to develop this project, but I would enjoy seeing Del Toro's take.
Over the last few years, Gullermo del Toro has been getting involved in a number of projects, including Trollhunters at DreamWorks Animation and The Jim Henson Company's Pinocchio. But THR says that "with Pacific Rim 2 shelved", Del Toro has been looking for something to direct and this "reunites" him with Cameron, "with whom he once tried to launch his passion project At the Mountains of Madness". He's also working with David Goyer again, the last name credit on the script for the new Fantastic Voyage, still executive producing. The only other info is that "the new movie is aimed at being an event-sized tentpole for the studio", but no date is set yet. We'll have to watch and see how this develops with Del Toro over the year.
We have been reporting on this Fantastic Voyage remake for years, once even writing in 2009 that James Cameron would be directing. Other names involved as director over the years include: Shawn Levy at one point, plus Paul Greengrass and Roland Emmerich, who was involved for a while throughout 2007. Richard Fleischer's classic 1966 sci-fi Fantastic Voyage is about a team of scientists that are shrunk to atomic size and sent in a tiny submarine inside the body of a scientist to save his life. It's the perfect kind of sci-fi that can be updated in a brilliant way, and I'm sure Guillermo must've had a helluva pitch in order to land this.
