Baz Luhrmann’s New Netflix Series The Get Down Looks Incredible

If 2015 was the year Netflix really came out of its shell as a content-producing network, what does that make 2016? We’re days in and we’re already piling up plenty of titles — including Daredevil and Judd Apatow’s Love — that will be added to our collective queue in the near future.

Add to that list The Get Down, from Baz Luhrmann and Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Terriers). As Joanna Robinson points out over at Vanity Fair, there are a number of comparisons that quickly come to mind. HBO’s upcoming show VinylEmpire, even some West Side Story. The only thing it doesn’t look like is a Baz Luhrmann production. It’s grounded, lives on the streets of the Bronx, but still has plenty of style.

The story revolves around a group of teens in South Bronx, whose lives intersect and are illuminated through music. It’s being billed as a “mythic sad of the transformation of 1970s New York.”

This 3-minute trailer has incredible energy. We get a good sense of the show’s tone — humorous, upbeat and irreverent. I can’t wait to see more. The cast looks fantastic. Both Justice Smith and Herizen Guardiola, the show’s relative newcomers, stand out in the trailer. As do more recognizable faces, such as Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito, Jimmy Smits and Dope star Shameik Moore. It’s as if the fanfare and CGI bombast of Luhrmann’s past few movies have been tempered by Shawn Ryan’s influence. His work on The Shield, followed by Terriers, prove that he’s the kind of creator whose knack is for creating worlds and characters that feel raw and real. The combination of these two ideals is very interesting and prevalent in this first trailer for The Get Down.

The Get Down does not yet have a firm release date, but it due on Netflix some time in 2016.
