It’s been a while since we’ve had an opportunity to talk about filmmaker Uwe Boll, a longtime favorite of the site. Not because we enjoy his movies (we sort of liked Rampage). Mostly because he has a fascinating, if entirely contentious, relationship to his audience. If you’re are watching one of his movies and you don’t like it, that seems to be the point. He hates you as much as you may eventually learn to hate him.
The last time we checked in on Boll, he was telling us all to go fuck ourselves after multiple attempts to crowdfund his film Rampage 3: No Mercy failed miserably. There was a very poor showing on IndieGoGo, then a follow-up campaign on Kickstarter that was a little closer, but still not fully funded. At the time of his “Fuck You” video, it didn’t look good for his latest film.
Today we received word that two things have happened:
- Uwe Boll opened a swanky German restaurant in Vancouver.
- He is about to start filming Rampage 3 in British Columbia and Washington D.C.
No, really.
Here’s the press release:
Amidst his highly-praised venture into the fine dining scene by opening Bauhaus Restaurant, acclaimed director Uwe Boll has not put down the movie camera. Uwe is currently on location in beautiful British Colombia (Langley and Maple Ridge) and Washington, D.C. to film the anticipated Rampage 3: No Mercy during the first weeks in January. When complete, this film will mark the thrilling conclusion of the well-received Rampage series, an action-packed trilogy featuring domestic terrorist Bill Williamson (Brendan Fletcher, The Revenant). This time, Bill takes on Capitol Hill in the heart of Washington, D.C.
Following the success of Rampage and Rampage 2: Capital Punishment, Uwe Boll’s dedicated production team, writers, and lead actor Brendan Fletcher are back for another action-packed sequel. Other producers include the local talents of Michael Pohorly and Uwe’s wife Natalie Boll. Matthias Neumann, the German director of photography who has collaborated on almost all of Uwe’s films, is also back to deliver the high production value you can expect from the Rampage trilogy.
This will be the last film Uwe Boll will direct for awhile due to his current focus on co-producing and global distribution with his company Event Film, which has acquired high-profile films such as King Cobra (James Franco, Alicia Silverstone, Molly Ringwald, Christian Slater).
There’s really a lot to process here. First is the fact that not only does Boll own a restaurant, according to its website he’s also the curator of its wine selection. It looks like a pretty swanky joint and has a 4 star rating on Yelp.
Next: An Important Message from Uwe Boll to Movie Fans
Next is the notion that he’s making Rampage 3: No Mercy. It’s always been curious to me that this “trilogy of domestic terrorism” continues on. Boll has never had a problem finding funding for his films. He makes them cheap, uses takes breaks and grants to his advantage, and I’m sure there’s still plenty of mileage to be had in the “so bad it’s actually kind of fun” video market. And before we scold Boll for making a trilogy of hyper-aggressive movies about the most prevalent issue in America (mass shootings), we have to consider the man’s attitude toward his audience. He hates you. Why other people continue to give him money to make films is still a mystery. Though in life, some things just aren’t meant to be understood by mere mortals.
For now, take comfort that Uwe Boll is doing just fine. Picking out wines for his restaurant and making terrible movies about mass shootings.
