'Trumbo' Leads the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations

SAG Awards Nominations

The nominees for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced today, putting awards season in full swing before the nominations for the Golden Globes are announced tomorrow morning. The Screen Actors Guild Awards are unique in that it's the actors themselves choose the best performances from amongst their peers. Last year it was Iñárritu's Birdman and The Theory of Everything battling for the top nominations, this year it's a very eclectic mix including the films Trumbo, Beasts of No Nation, Carol, Brooklyn, Room and I Smile Back as the big highlights. Leonaro DiCaprio also gets a nom for The Revenant.

Here's the full list of film nominees for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards (see TV nominees here):

ENSEMBLE STUNTS:
Everest
Furious 7
Jurassic World
Mad Max: Fury Road
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation

And there you have it. Lots of dissension, many interesting and odd picks, but most of them are some of the better performances of the year. I'm still a big fan of two other Supporting Actor performances: Jason Segel in The End of the Tour, and Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight, but that's such a crowded category this year with so many incredible performances. I'm also surprised that Mad Max: Fury Road was only nominated for stunts, not even Charlize Theron or ensemble. At least it got something. As usual, there are plenty of other awards coming up so if your favorite performance got snubbed here, there's a chance it may still get recognized. The SAG Awards will be handed out Sunday, January 30th, 2016, airing on TNT and TBS at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
