It’s still going to be a while until we see anything substantial from Game of Thrones season 6, but this new HBO 2015 wrap-up/2016 preview teaser does sneak in a little bit of footage. In addition to some Thrones stuff, we also get a little tease of some interesting upcoming shows — Vinyl, Divorce, Vice Principals (oh my god, yes) — and the promised returns of Thrones’ Sunday night cohorts Veep and Silicon Valley.
Welcoming all of these shows (back) into my life will be glorious. It also means more podcasting on A Storm of Spoilers. The new year can’t come soon enough.
Anyway, back to the Thrones stuff. First are the two little looks at season 6 footage, which includes Daenerys hanging out by some water:
And Cersei being unusually motherly with her pixie cut:
But as my Storm of Spoilers co-host Joanna Robinson rightly points out over at Vanity Fair, it’s not necessarily the new footage that’s most interesting. There’s also a very specific line of Melisandre’s juxtaposed with a shot of Kit Harington as Jon Snow. The shot isn’t new, nor is the line, but their usage together is meaningful in proving the SPOILER that every single person in the world knows:
The shot we get of Harington during the 2015 portion of this HBO clip seems to confirm the most popular theory about the return of Jon Snow. Right towards the start of the video we have the erstwhile Lord Commander lit by torchlight with a Melisandre voice over saying, “There’s power in you, do you feel it?” It’s something she said to Jon when trying to seduce him in episode 4 of Season 5.
As the first official Game of Thrones season 6 teaser — which includes no actual new footage — points out, they have no idea what’s coming:
Max von Sydow!
Strap in, folks. Game of Thrones returns in April.
