This is becoming its own subgenre. You take a fierce black action star, be it a hard-nosed detective played by Ice Cube or a muscular superspy played by Dwayne Johnson, and you put Kevin Hart in the car next to them. Then you just sort of let hijinks ensue.
This is exactly the case with Central Intelligence, a new action comedy from Rawson Marshall Thurber, director of films such as Dodgeball and We’re The Millers. It features the aforementioned Fast & Furious Mr. Johnson as a CIA man who needs the help saving the world, so he turns to a mild mannered accountant played by Ride Along‘s Kevin Hart.
To be honest, this is a subgenre I can get behind, as Ride Along was pretty funny. As long as we can keep Kevin Hart away from Will Ferrell, we should be in good shape. The Rock is a solid pairing, as he’s got both comedic and action chops. And there are plenty of size jokes to go around. As evidence from the film’s poster suggests, citing the fact that all you really need is “a little Hart and a big Johnson.”
This first Central Intelligence trailer gives us a sufficient taste of the action and the comedy. This should be a pretty harmless bit of goofiness and who am I to deny The Rock? Then again, it did get really weird there toward the end:
God help us all.
Central Intelligence is due in theaters June 17, 2016.
