If somewhere better than here, an 8-part TV series existed that asked the question “if you could go back in time, would you kill baby Hitler?”, and starred Jeb Bush as a man on a mission, sent back in time to kill a future super-Nazi while juggling issues like culture shock and an unconvincing German accent…I wouldn’t be writing this right now. I’d be watching that instead.
Unfortunately that series doesn’t exist so we’ll have to settle for the next best thing, which as it turns out, is pretty damn cool. If you haven’t already heard about it, Stephen King’s 2011 best-selling novel “11.22.63” posed the question “if you could go back in time, would you save JFK?” and was adapted by J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot into an 8-part series starring James Franco. Hulu picked up the series back in 2014 and yesterday they released the first teaser trailer that, while short, packs a big punch and is dripping in intrigue. Stephen King, J.J. Abrams, and James Franco!? History, an assassination plot, and time-travel!? The talent and components at work here are exciting alone and the teaser cranks it up even more.
Directed by Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) and overseen by Abrams and King themselves, 11.22.63 stars James Franco as high school teacher Jake Epping who goes back in time to try to stop the JFK assassination, but the mission is threatened by a new love interest, Lee Harvey Oswald himself, and a past refusing to change. The series also stars Chris Cooper, Josh Duhamel, T.R. Knight, Cherry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Lucy Fry, George MacKay and Daniel Webber.
It was a smart move for Hulu to pick up 11.22.63 given the competition from Netflix and Amazon in terms of original programming. The series will likely become the streaming service’s best original offering and serve as incentive for potential subscribers. 11.22.63 premieres on Hulu February 15 of next year. How clever- that’s President’s Day.
