This First Krampus Trailer Will Scare The Yule Log Out of You

Much to the chagrin of horror fans, it’s been a while since we’ve heard from director Michael Dougherty. After giving us the brilliant Halloween tale Trick ‘r Treat in 2007, Dougherty has stayed out of the director’s chair, taking time to co-write the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. Around the middle of last year, he began production on Krampus, yet another holiday themed horror film. With its release imminent (just in time for this Christmas, actually), the folks at Legendary Pictures have released a first trailer. And oh boy, does it look like a gruesome bit of fun.

As the official synopsis explains, Krampus is “a darkly festive tale of a yuletide ghoul, reveals an irreverently twisted side to the holiday. When his dysfunctional family clashes over the holidays, young Max (Emjay Anthony) is disillusioned and turns his back on Christmas. Little does he know, this lack of festive spirit has unleashed the wrath of Krampus: a demonic force of ancient evil intent on punishing non-believers. All hell breaks loose as beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own, laying siege to the fractured family’s home and forcing them to fight for each other if they hope to survive.”

The film stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania Lavie Owen and Krista Stadler. The many mischievous underlings were created by the folks at Weta Workshop and Weta Digital.

Krampus is due in theaters December 4. In addition to the trailer, we also have these new photos to share:
