It’s been a while, so I might need to revisit the original Disney animated film The Jungle Book, because I don’t remember there being so much heart-pounding action. Based on the trailer for Jon Favreau‘s live-action version of The Jungle Book, which is conveniently available for viewing above, this is the “From the Director of Iron Man!” version of the story of Mowgli, Baloo and their jungle full of friends and frenemies.
The trailer is interesting in the way that Avatar was interesting at first. The photo-realness of the world is very impressive. Though if you’ll notice in the trailer, we only get one little shot of an animal talking. It’s the snake, Kaa, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, who serves as narrator. You have to look very closely to even recognize that the animal’s mouth is moving. Perhaps talking CGI animals was just a little too silly for this bombastic trailer.
Considering the rave reviews of the extended footage from Disney’s D23 expo, it’s safe to say that we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg with this trailer. It looks well-crafted and action-packed. Whether or not it will have enough dramatic resonance to make this live-action re-adaptation worthwhile for audiences is yet to be seen. For now, we’re intrigued by Favreau’s vision.
The Jungle Book is due in theaters April 15, 2016.
