Be Not Afraid of The Angry Birds Movie

You know who also hates the sound effects from the Angry Birds video game? The characters of The Angry Birds Movie. As you can see from this trailer, the folks at Rovio, makers of the popular game, were absolutely not kidding when they announced that they’d be producing a movie based on their iconic little birds that have been draining your iPhone battery for years.

In creating the cinematic vision that we see in this trailer, Rovio enlisted the help of two veterans of animation to direct: Clay Kaytis, an artist who has worked on films like Frozen, Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph for Disney; and Fergal Reilly, an storyboard artist who worked on movies like Spider-Man 2, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Iron Giant and Space Jam. They also enlisted John Vitti, a long-time writer/producer on The Simpsons, to write the script. So they’ve done their homework on their first big movie project.

This trailer gives us a better idea of what the movie will look like (pretty great) and who will voice these previously only squeaky characters. That’s another thing this film has going for it: a really deep cast that includes Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph, Keegan-Michael Key, Danny McBride, Orange is the New Black star Danielle Brooks, SNL‘s Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Hannibal Buress and Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage.

None of the information in the previous two paragraphs is bad news for a movie about ill-tempered, animated birds. It all sounds quite good, actually, despite the silliness of the concept. Then again, Despicable Me seemed like a silly concept and Universal turned it into a juggernaut franchise. This is all to say that The Angry Birds Movie could very well turn out to be a lot of fun. We’ll see for ourselves when it hits theaters on May 20, 2016.
