A Powerful First Room Trailer Breaks Out Into The World

As we mentioned yesterday, Awards Season is here. With it comes many desperate attempts to catch the ever-fickle eye of The Academy. Then there are movies like Room, starring Brie Larson. There’s nothing desperate or cheap about this film, which tells the story of a young mother who is held captive in a solitary room with her 5-year old son.

It’s the kind of movie that found critics at the Telluride Film Festival last week calling it things like “deeply moving” and “a triumph.” Given the excellent work that we’ve seen from director Lenny Abrahamson (2014’s Frank) and actress Brie Larson (2013’s Short Term 12), we have no reason to doubt what the first round of festival reviews are saying. Here’s a particularly interesting quote from the review of David Ehrlich over at Time Out:

“If Abrahamson were as gifted with a camera as he was with his cast (he inspires subtlety even from the tiny Tremblay), Room could have been truly worthy of the astonishing performances that provide its foundation. As it stands, the film is still a heartrending exploration of the worlds that parents create with their kids, the devastation that arises when those mountains move, and the ineffable fulfillment that results from climbing the peaks together.”

Room will open in NY and LA on October 16, with a nationwide release on November 6. The film’s official synopsis is below:

Both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, ROOM is a unique and unexpectedly tender exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child.  After 5-year-old Jack and his Ma escape from the enclosed surroundings that Jack has known his entire life, the boy makes a thrilling discovery: the outside world.  As he experiences all the joy, excitement, and fear that this new adventure brings, he holds tight to the one thing that matters most of all–his special bond with his loving and devoted Ma.
