The Ride Along 2 Trailer Heads for Miami, Is Like a Goofy Bad Boys

Last week, it was announced that Universal Pictures has set a new box office record with $5.53 billion dollars in worldwide grosses already this year. And it’s only 7 months into the year. Their success wasn’t powered by superhero movies, but with a diverse slate of entertaining movies. The likes of Furious 7, MinionsPitch Perfect 2 and Jurassic World. Plus 50 Shades of Grey, which might not fall into the “entertaining” category, but it was something a little different.

Even though Universal has plenty left in 2015 — including Straight Outta Compton this week, Steve Jobs in October, among others — they are also looking to get a good start to 2016 with Ride Along 2. The first film, which matched Ice Cube and Kevin Hart together has a gritty cop and his sister’s less than gritty boyfriend, grossed $153 million worldwide when it opened in January of last year. Considering it’s relatively modest budget, this was a huge winner in 2014. To say the least, it’s likely that Universal will be off to a solid and profitable start in January of next year.

The movie itself appears to continue the dynamic between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart’s character (who is now a cop himself), sending them to Miami to take down a drug kingpin alongside Olivia Munn and Community‘s Ken Joeng. The action and vibe of Miami, combined with a dynamic between the two leads, is giving me all kinds of flashbacks to Bad Boys. And considering the fact that I found the first Ride Along to be pretty good fun, I see no reason why this one won’t be a much of the same.
