It has been officially confirmed that filmmaker Wes Craven has passed away in California. Craven died at his home in Los Angeles of brain cancer at age 76, according to Variety. He last directed the horror sequel Scream 4 in 2011, but there were rumors that Scream 5 might have been in the works as well. Craven made his feature directing debut with the controversial horror The Last House on the Left in 1972, and he's been shaking up and pushing the horror-thriller genre forward ever since. Aside from the Scream series, perhaps Craven's most successful horror franchise is the A Nightmare on Elm Street series which he started in 1984.

Craven's iconic horror filmography includes The Hills Have Eyes, Deadly Blessing, Stranger in Our House, Invitation to Hell, Shocker, The People Under the Stairs, New Nightmare, Vampire in Brooklyn, Cursed, the Scream and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises, plus My Soul to Take in 3D from 2010. Craven did not direct any of the A Nightmare on Elm Street sequels, only the first one, though he did also direct a few other films like Swamp Thing, Music of the Heart and Red Eye throughout his career. Craven claimed he got the idea for Elm Street while living next to a cemetery on a street of that name while growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland. His legacy is a seminal set of horror films, and many devoted fans to remember him.
