Doctor Who Series 9 Trailer: Maisie Williams is the Big Sell This Time

After finally getting into Doctor Who in the summer of 2012 (thanks to a then-6-year-old boy’s birthday Who-themed birthday party) and catching up on the modern run of the show, the first trailer for a new season I’d seen was for series 7. That, you may recall, was the one that showed us a glimpse of dinosaurs on a spaceship — and Matt Smith verbally reiterating, “Dinosaurs … on a spaceship.” It also teased of a Western episode, a New York City episode and, of course, plenty of Daleks. It looked epic, more blockbuster than ever, and it made sense, as that was the time many others besides me finally got hooked.

Three years and two seasons later, the first teaser for series 9 isn’t too exciting. I mean other than the fact that it’s a new crop of Doctor Who episodes. The clips compiled from these episodes show the same old aliens and light-horror imagery, plus a bit of last year’s mysterious Missy (Michelle Gomez) — aka the new Master. There’s an indication the show will be exploring the character of the still fairly fresh Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) — and how he’s here to save everyone of us — more than action and fun with genre. The trailer isn’t going to pull in any new fans, the way dinosaurs on spaceships might of, save for maybe some Game of Thrones junkies.

Maisie Williams in Doctor Who

BBC

Yes, Maisie Williams is the big draw here. She’s the dinosaurs on a spaceship. As far as it’s been stated when the GOT actress was announced for a role on Doctor Who, her appearance is limited to a single episode. But the way she’s presented here, saved for last and seemingly arriving with immediate significance for the Doctor (“You!” “What took you so long, old man?”). And she’s previously gotten her own publicity photo where she’s standing inside the TARDIS like she’s a new cast member. Perhaps it’s all just for the sell, because she’s Maisie Williams and a notable draw, but I hope all this isn’t just pumping us up for a single guest appearance. At least a two-episode arc, please.

Other than Williams, and probably more than her involvement, I have to say that Hettie MacDonald (series 3’s phenomenal “Blink”) returning to direct the first two episodes of series 9 is pretty darn exciting. Good idea letting Rachel Talalay do the last two again, just as she did last season.
