With this year’s The Longest Ride hardly a hit at the box office, 8 Seconds remains the fan favorite when it comes to rodeo movies. And it’s more than 20 years old. That could very well change when Bronco Belle hits theaters sometime in the future. Emily Blunt will star in the drama, according to Screen Daily, playing an American bull rider named Raylene Jackson who “battles through heartbreak, prejudice, broken dreams and bones to reach the top of the sport.”
Hopefully the title will change, in part because a bronco is a horse, not a bull, and in part because Bronco Belle is apparently also the name of a barbecue joint in Vancouver, and that will likely remain a major search result for people looking for this movie. Blunt will be joined by two not-yet-cast male leads, one an old trainer and the other a promoter. Presumably, the latter will also be a love interest, because a movie like this needs one of those.
Bronco Belle is written and will be directed by Khurram Longi, who will now make this his feature debut. He previously helmed episodes of the UK series My Life as a Popat and was set to make the transition to the big screen with Alive Alone, his script for which was featured on the prestigious Black List in the US and Brit List in the UK. That movie, which was to star Idris Elba, Noomi Rapace and Sam Worthington, has stalled.
Following Blunt’s acclaimed performance in Edge of Tomorrow last year, fans and critics alike have been eager for the actress to take on more action roles, maybe even a big superhero part (did you know she was originally cast as Black Widow for the MCU?). Her only potential kick-ass gig on her docket at the moment is the Snow White prequel The Huntsman, but even though Bronco Belle is a drama it should showcase Blunt’s strengths in some tough action scenes.
