Crimson Peak Trailer: A Ghost-Obsessed Girl Finds the House of Her Dreams

Two new trailers have arrived for Crimson Peak, the new movie from Guillermo del Toro that could very well be the best thing he’s ever done. Between the second US trailer above and the international trailer below, we can get a better sense of the story, which officially is about a young woman named Edith (Mia Wasikowska) who “is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers.”

What the house remembers, apparently, are the violent deaths that occurred there. And Edith needs to stay away from certain parts of the gigantic estate if she wants to be safe. But she’s also an author interested in ghosts (except those figurative sorts from her past), so of course she’s not going to stay out of the forbidden areas. She’s going to meet bloody corpses who like to play piano and take baths.

Residing in the house are the Sharpes, brother and sister played by Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain. He’s into Edith, she’s not. Meanwhile, Edith’s doctor pal (Charlie Hunnam) warns her to proceed to the house with caution. Again, she’s into ghosts. It’s like nobody around her is paying attention to the obvious regarding her professional interests.

But never mind the character flaws, as written or in the context of the story. Frankly, I don’t care if this movie has a great story or great dialogue — Hiddleston’s line about old houses just, y’know, coming to life after time, is a bit much — or great character. I can already tell it’s going to be a movie worth looking at for two hours or however long it turns out to be.

I have to admit that I continue to be baffled, with every new glimpse at this Victorian horror film, as to why del Toro is still bothering with a Haunted Mansion movie for Disney. For the kids, I guess, and at least that audience can later grow up and see this as a substitution. Or at least a counterpart. Imagine if every filmmaker did roughly the same movie twice, one version for children, one for adults?

Crimson Peak opens in the US on October 16th and in other parts of the world in October and November. Here’s the international trailer for extra scenes and plot details:
