Another mutant has joined the ranks of X-Men: Apocalypse . Just after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Kodi Smit-McPhee was hired to play Nightcrawler in the next installment of the X-Men series, albeit in a new timeline, The Wrap reports Ben Hardy, the British television star of the UK series "EastEnders," is in talks for a key role in the film. Funnily enough, Hardy was up for the role of young Cyclops before it went to Tye Sheridan, and there have been rumblings that he might play a young version of Angel. However, the source notes that other insiders say that he's playing another mutant, though specifics are under wraps.
Hardy joins a big cast that includes returning X-Men franchise stars Hugh Jackmanm Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy and Evan Peters, not to mention the return of Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert after sitting out of X-Men: Days of Future Past. There's also Oscar Isaac as the title villain and Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Alexandra Shipp as Storm. That's a lot of mutants, and hopefully it's not too much.
At this point, this is where things could get confusing for fans, mainly because of this new, technically rebooted timeline in the past. For example, we're going to meet Nightcrawler much earlier than the original X-Men did in the previous franchise. In addition, the mention of a young Angel seems like it doesn't like up with previous X-Men movie mythology at all, regardless of the time travel retcon. That's because in X-Men: The Last Stand, the mutant Angel was already a young dude, in his late teens or early 20s, played by Ben Foster. So if he was alive in the 80s, he would probably be an infant. But maybe we're just nitpicking. Time travel changes everything. X-Men: Apocalypse arrives on May 27th, 2016 .
