The Lobster Trailer: Prepare to Fall in Love, Like It or Not

Alchemy

I couldn’t help but laugh through this first trailer for The Lobster, the twisted dystopian romance from Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos. For me, the trailer is a reminder of the strange and wonderful world building that Lanthimos accomplishes in his film, which I saw in September at Fantastic Fest. Set in a dystopian near future, The Lobster shows us the world of single people, who are forced to live in a hotel for 45 days. Their goal is to find love before their stay ends, otherwise they will be transformed into an animal of their choosing.

As you may have read in our review from Fantastic Fest, there’s more to this twisted, dark comedy than just a fresh premise. The cast is fantastic. Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, Ben Wishaw and Léa Seydoux are as strong a small ensemble as you’ll see in 2016. And The Lobster‘s vision is one of the boldest you’ll see all year, as well. Surprisingly endearing, unapologetically weird and deep, dark funny, this one comes recommended highly by everyone who has seen it.

The trailer, which does well to not give away too much of the movie, provides a proper setup. See for yourself below. The Lobster will be in theaters starting March 11, 2016.

Synopsis: A love story set in the near future where single people, according to the rules of The City, are arrested and transferred to The Hotel. There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods. A desperate Man escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live and falls in love, although it is against their rules.

Rated: R
