Netflix is Bringing Hitler Back

Look Who's Back

It’s been a month and a week and 2016 has already been a banner year for Netflix. Last month, the streaming service announced its plans to expand to 130 new global territories, which would make it the world’s most ubiquitous streaming platform. In late January, they made a number of acquisitions at the Sundance Film Festival — picking up the Indian sex comedy Brahman Nahman and the Iranian horror film Under the Shadow — proving once again that if Netflix has anything, it’s an aggressive drive to have a wildly diverse offering of exclusive and original content.

They’ve added to that offering today, picking up the worldwide streaming rights to Look Who’s Back, a satirical film about Adolf Hitler living in modern day Germany. Based on the bestselling novel by Timur Vermes, Look Who’s Back finds the former Führer waking up in present-day Berlin with no memory of anything that happened since 1945. It’s similar to Captain America, but with more fascism. Hitler, played here by Oliver Masucci, is eventually mistaken for a comedy actor and lands himself a career in television, which he uses to propel a political comeback.

It all reminds me of this wonderful Monty Python sketch:

Despite an expectedly controversial narrative, Look Who’s Back has been a huge hit in Germany. It opened in October to a $22 million gross. As you can see in the subtitled trailer below, Look Who’s Back has a mockumentary vibe, similar to that of Sacha Baron Cohen’s work on Borat.

Look Who’s Back is set to debut on Netflix on April 9.
