5 Things We Can’t Wait to See When The Flash visits Earth-2

The Flash: Welcome to Earth-2

Tomorrow night, Team Flash will take their most interesting journey yet as Barry, Cisco and Dr. Wells travel to Earth-2 to rescue Wells’ daughter Jesse from Zoom. “Welcome to Earth-2” kicks off the most exciting 2-part storyline yet, introducing us to an entire alternate world and bringing in some villains that look a lot like old friends.

The episode will be directed by Millicent Shelton, who hasn’t been back to the show since directing the excellent sixth episode of season one, “The Flash is Born.” That was the episode in which Iris first coined the name “The Flash.” This time around, Shelton’s steady hand (and solid eye for action) will be put to use as Flash introduces two long-awaited Earth-2 villains: Danielle Panabaker as Killer Frost and Robbie Amell as Deathstorm. It’s an episode that Flash fans have been looking forward to for a while. And with Blastr dumping 23 brand new episode stills online earlier today, I thought it might be appropriate to pick out some moments that I can’t wait to see when Team Flash goes galavanting on Earth-2.

1. Earth-2 Iris, the badass

The Flash: Earth-2 Iris

It’s been a while since Candice Patton has had the opportunity to do much action work on Flash. For the bulk of season 2, Iris has carried a lot of the emotional weight of the West Family Drama Hour. Between reconnecting with her mother, discovering and attempting to corral her brother, and dealing with her father’s emotions, she’s been one of the show’s rocks. Earth-2 Iris appears to be a little different. A little bit more of a badass. The production stills show her not once, but twice in action mode. This version of Iris is a lot more exciting.

2. Killer Frost

The Flash: Killer Frost

Speaking of more exciting work, how awesome does Danielle Panabaker look as Killer Frost? Panabaker has long been the unsung heroine of this show and now she gets to play around a bit. Caitlin has always been the strong, smart, principled cornerstone of Team Flash. Killer Frost is an uninhibited wrecking ball with an evil agenda. There are comic versions of Killer Frost in which her body is almost completely encased in permafrost. The cure for which is a proximity to Firestorm. This is something we might not end up seeing — the show probably won’t blow a huge chunk on the effects budget and they can write it off, as she’ll have her walking antidote Deathstorm in tow — but man, would that make for a cool visual gag. Either way, Panabaker appears to be having fun in the trailer (seen below) as Killer Frost and the rest of us should be in for a good ride.

3. Robbie Amell returns as Deathstorm

The Flash: Deathstorm

In the comics, Deathstorm is a third personality that emerges within the Firestorm Matrix after Ronnie Raymond is resurrected as a member of the Black Lantern Corps. At the time, Ronnie is part of the Firestorm Matrix with a character named Jason Rusch. Upon discovering that they are not alone within the Matrix, Ronnie and Jason are split apart by the third voice, who calls himself Deathstorm. He is said to be the personification of death itself.

It’s not likely that we’ll get any of this within the context of The Flash. As is par for the course, this show already has enough going on that it doesn’t need to be dabbling in the backstory of Deathstorm. It will be nice to see Robbie Amell back on the show. And like Danielle Panabaker, he gets to play it evil.

4. Jesse L. Martin singing

The Flash: Joe West sings

Plenty of people know Jesse L. Martin as Joe West on The Flash. Others recognized him as Detective Ed Green from Law & Order. But if you’re a fan of Broadway, you know him even better. He originated the role of Tom Collins on Broadway in the musical Rent and has been prominently featured in numerous other Broadway productions. He also reprised the role of Tom Collins in the 1995 film version of Rent. He’s one hell of a singer. On Flash, he’s been a strong dramatic presence. It was only a matter of time before his other major talent was put to use. This episode still suggests that the wait is over.

5. Barry and Iris

The Flash: Barry and Iris

Is a little bit of romance in order for Barry and Iris on Earth-2? The ink on the Team Patty death certificate is barely dry and it appears as if a vacation is all Barry needs to get back to snuggling with his adopted sister. It’s easy to forget the prophecy that Gideon gave us in season one, that Iris would eventually become Iris Allen. Does that still hold up in the eventuality of this show? It’s been a while since they’ve come anywhere close to Barry and Iris having some romance. Perhaps this trip to Earth-2 will inspire Barry to take a closer look at the love he let go on Earth-1.

It all has the makings of a very fun episode. And as you can see in the trailer below, the opportunity presented by including Killer Frost will not be wasted by the show’s writers.
