Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix, but the rest of us are too busy enjoying new movies, engaging series, and fun specials. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish, and this month sees some of both hitting the service.
The complete list of movies and shows hitting (and leaving) Netflix this month — October 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.
Netflix Pick of the Month
Zak Hilditch’s These Final Hours is one of 2013’s best films, and his Stephen King adaptation (1922, 2017) is a solidly atmospheric period thriller. His latest arrives as an Original Film for Netflix with a story about a mother forced into a dangerous test of her morals when the life of her own daughter becomes reliant on her killing a stranger. Rattlesnake sinks its fangs in starting October 25th, and I’m hoping it’s a tight, thrilling slice of tension and suspense.
A YA Post-Apocalypse
I moved to Glendale earlier this summer, and now Netflix is debuting a new post-apocalyptic series set in Glendale. Coincidence? Probably, but it’s enough to pique my interest. Daybreak rises on October 24th and promises an irreverently playful but still violently thrilling look at America’s youth when America is no more. It’s hard to tell by the pic above, but this could really be either real fun or real dumb.
Planning Ahead
Bad Boys for Life is due in theaters at the start of next year — I’m not kidding! — so you should probably start planning a rewatch of the first two films now. Thankfully, Netflix has your back and has added both Bad Boys (1995) and Bad Boys II (2003) to their service this month. The brand new Charlie’s Angels reboot arrives even sooner, so why not give both Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003) a spin? People seem to like both, but I’m betting Elizabeth Banks’ new incarnation starring Kristen Stewart is even better.
Big Netflix Originals!
Stephen King’s latest resurgence continues with In the Tall Grass (arrives October 4th), an adaptation by Vincenzo Natali of the novella written by King and Joe Hill. It’s pretty okay! El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie roars onto Netflix on October 11th, and while people seem conspicuously quiet on this one I expect the return of Aaron Paul and creator Vince Gilligan should excite more than a few of you out there. October 11th also brings a new film from Japanese filmmaker Sion Sono with The Forest of Love. What’s it about? No clue, but you can bet it will feature some schoolgirls in distress. Fractured also lands on October 11th and is a new thriller from director Brad Anderson. I didn’t hear anything good about it at Fantastic Fest where it premiered, but I’m still looking forward to it. Steven Soderbergh’s latest, The Laundromat, opens its doors on October 18th, and while its fest appearance was met with mixed results it’s still a Soderbergh joint. And finally, Dolemite Is My Name opens its mouth on October 25th, and by all accounts this Eddie Murphy star vehicle is a fantastic and funny ride.
