Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.
The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — June 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.
Amazon Prime Pick of the Month
I more often than not choose films I’ve seen and love for this slot, but I’m making an exception as one I’ve never seen but would love to watch is arriving on Prime on June 30th. Lovin’ Molly (1974) has somehow eluded me over the years despite its pedigree — director Sidney Lumet adapting a Larry McMurtry novel into a film starring Anthony Perkins, Beau Bridges, Blythe Danner, Susan Sarandon, and Marilyn Burns (who would star in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre this same year). It’s a romantic drama set across four decades, and in a world where most streaming titles are new, original, branded product it’s great to see an older film get a chance at new life. Here’s hoping it’s a gem!
Recent Comedies You Might Have Missed
There are a lot of movies released each year, and there’s no shame in having missed some good ones along the way. Two comedies from last year are making their way to Prime this month, and both might be worth a watch for those looking for some laughs. Juliet, Naked (2018) reveals itself on June 24th and is a delightful little rom-com bringing the eternally wonderful Rose Byrne into contact with the equally great Ethan Hawke while Chris O’Dowd peers in from the sidelines. It’s funny, sweet, and a must-see for Byrne alone. The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018) drops on June 28th, and while I’d be lying if I said I found it all that funny — don’t worry, I’m in the minority — I will praise its action beats all day long. Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon star as best friends who get caught up in some spy shenanigans, and the action beats rival far too many of Hollywood’s traditional action releases.
Tom Cruise Marathon!
Three movies starring the one and only Thomas Cruise Mapother hit Prime on June 30th, and they’re all very good to great. I’ll let you decide which adjective applies to which film, but I’m a fan of all three so you probably are too. Minority Report (2002) sees Cruise team up with Steven Spielberg for a thrilling ride into the future of law enforcement, and everyone’s bringing their A game here from the cast to the f/x to action and beyond. The Last Samurai (2003) makes the uncomfortable choice of putting Cruise in the role of white savior, but the film acquits itself through a visible respect for the Japanese culture, a terrific character and performances brought to life by Ken Watanabe, and some fantastically staged action sequences. Mission: Impossible III (2006) remains my favorite of the franchise thanks to the action, villain, and fantastic emotional beats.
A Movie Named Moose, But Not the John Travolta One
The folks at Amazon Prime send out a list of the films coming to the service each month, and June’s email resulted in some sites “reporting” that Moose, a new film directed by Fred Durst and starring John Travolta and Devon Sawa, was being unceremoniously dropped on June 29th. What those reports chose to ignore, however, is that the Moose coming to Prime is from 2015. Durst’s 2019 film, renamed The Fanatic, is still on course for a limited release — most likely straight to streaming — later this year. The Moose trampling its way onto Prime is a horror/comedy about a half-man/half-moose terrorizing a small Alaskan town. And yes, I will be watching it.
