Amazon Prime is the only streaming service with a cost that also gets you free shipping, and that my friends is a deal. They’re in the Original programming game, but their biggest offering remains the ton of films available to watch anytime for Prime members.
The complete list of titles hitting Amazon Prime this month — May 2019 — is below, but first I’m going to shower some affection and point some eyeballs towards a few specific titles.
Amazon Prime Pick of the Month
Remakes are never a bad thing on their face — some are good, some are bad — but the idea of redoing Dario Argento’s most well-known film struck some as patently absurd. Luckily, and smartly, director Luca Guadagnino wasn’t interested in making a simple remake with his Suspiria (2018). The core story remains, and the film finds its own immense beauty, but the narrative improves in exciting and historically relevant ways. Both films are fantastic and exist apart from each other, and this serves as a perfect example on how to approach and execute a remake.
Franchise Fever
Sometimes when you watch a movie you find yourself so amped up on the material that you wish a sequel was available to watch right away. Well hold onto your shorts, because Amazon Prime is adding a couple possibilities for you. First up, May 16th brings both The Punisher (2004) and Punisher: War Zone (2008), and while the latter isn’t a direct sequel and the tone is wholly different they both offer their own degree of fun. Prefer something a decade or two older? May 31st sees the arrival of F/X (1986) and its follow-up F/X2 (1991). Both are entertaining, but the first film remains a blast for fans of movie makeup and effects antics.
It’s a Dog’s Life
Love dogs? While do I have two movies for you… okay fine, only one has anything to do with actual dogs but maybe cut me a little slack here. Fluke (1995) is an adaptation of a James Herbert novel, but rather than be a horror tale like you’re expecting from the author of The Rats, it’s actually a heart-warming adventure about forgiveness and reincarnation. Matthew Modine enters a dog, aurally! That doesn’t sound right, but he does voice a dog while Samuel L. Jackson gives voice to another. Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) is more metaphorical in its canine titling, but even though it’s his first film it remains one of his best.
