What’s New to Stream on Netflix for January 2019

Some people spend their days arguing over the merits of Netflix and how it’s “killing cinema” as we know it, but the rest of us know better. It’s just one more way to re-watch the movies we already love and find new ones to cherish. This month sees plenty of both hitting the service.

The complete list of movies and shows hitting Netflix this month — January 2019 — is below including Ant-Man and the Wasp, Incredibles 2, and more, but first I’m going to highlight a few that stand apart from the bunch.

Red Dots

Netflix Pick of the Month

South Korea is home to all manner of genre gems, but their zombie output is fairly limited. There’s 2016’s animated Seoul Station and its live-action sequel Train to Busan, and then there’s… Kingdom, which premieres on January 25th. It’s a six-episode season telling the story of a medieval kingdom facing a crisis of leadership and the undead. I’m already 100% in for this, and then I find out it stars Doona Bae? Yeah, this is the must-see Netflix Original of the month.

Originals With Promise

Revenger

That’s far from the only Original for January, and of the couple dozen or so others a few more stand out as possibly worthwhile. Revenger is a South Korean action/thriller that sends a pissed-off cop to an island prison in search of revenge, and it arrives on January 15th. Close lands on the 18th and pits Noomi Rapace as a bodyguard facing her biggest threat yet. IO also comes to Earth on the 18th and is the story of a teenager on the cusp of the planet’s demise. Finally, Jonas Ã…kerlund’s Polar hits on the 25th featuring Mads Mikkelsen as an assassin forced out of retirement to deal with some upstart killers.

Two Solos Are Better Than One

Solo: A Star Wars Story

The much maligned but mostly mediocre Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) arrives on January 9th, and while it’s something of an unnecessary retread there’s fun to be had. Alden Ehrenreich does a great Harrison Ford and delivers much of the film’s entertainment, and the rest is solid enough for fans of the Star Wars universe. Solo isn’t alone, though, as Solo (2018) also hits Netflix on the 11th. The Spanish survival tale sees a man tumble onto an isolated beach forcing him into a fight for his life against nature.

The Oldest Movie of the Month

Monty Python And The Holy Grail

Netflix remains a home mostly for more recent films and shows with the majority of their wares having premiered this millennium, but they still dip occasionally into the 20th century. This month’s oldest arrival is a comedy classic by the name of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975). If you’ve seen it, watch it again, but if you haven’t, well strap in for an absurdly entertaining romp that puts a hilarious spin on a classic tale you only thought you knew.
