‘Lady Bird’ Charms the New York Film Critics Circle

By Max Covill

A24 and Lady Bird big winners at NYFCC.

Another critics group has unveiled their choices for the best of cinema for the year 2017. The New York Film Critics Circle has announced their winners. While some expected choices are intact (Coco and Get Out), there are other more surprising choices all around. NYFCC decided to give Lady Bird their highest honor, while Saoirse Ronan was awarded Best Actress for her part in the film. Otherwise, the awards were pretty spread out, with only The Florida Project taking home two as well for Best Director (Sean Baker) and Best Supporting Actor (Willem Dafoe). That makes four wins for distributor A24.

Some other notable selections include Timothée Chalamet for Call Me by Your Name, who is now the youngest actor to ever win the award for the NYFCC. By that same token, Rachel Morrison was the first woman to ever win for best cinematography for her work in Mudbound. Perhaps the most stunning decision NYFCC made in their selections was Tiffany Haddish for her work in Girls Trip. There has been a lot of discussions made about her performance and whether or not it would be able to stand up against great work from Allison Janney and Laurie Metcalf. Perhaps Haddish will be able to wear her favorite dress to the Oscars as well.
