A new movie about Dunkirk, you say?
There were a lot of big headlines out the fall film festivals, movies trying to make their claim for the big upcoming awards season. There was one film that sealed the deal, though. Darkest Hour, directed by Joe Wright, showcases the future Best Actor winner, Gary Oldman. He has been on the cusp of winning the coveted award before, for his performance in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But critics are calling Oldman transformative as Winston Churchill, so a nomination is a lock.
As for the film itself, Darkest Hour is the second film this year to chronicle the events of the Dunkirk evacuation during World War II. Instead of focusing on the big military battles, Darkest Hour focuses on Churchill and his efforts against the Nazi regime. We originally had Darkest Hour listed as one of our most anticipated of the year, and it looks to have lived up to those expectations.
Wright needed a bounce back after the poorly received Pan. Darkest Hour seems to have a lot more in common with his successful adaptation of Atonement than anything else he’s done. Watch the new trailer:
