‘American Horror Story: Cult,’ New ‘Bojack Horseman’ and More TV You Must See This Week

This week the eerie and unsettling ends with the Twin Peaks: The Return finale, but American Horror Story: Cult arrives just in time to keep the fire of fear alive. New comedy shenanigans, spiced with existential crisis, come with the new fourth seasons of Bojack Horseman and You’re the Worst, while new documentaries explore the lives of one of the most influential rappers and a group of middle-aged friends with Down Syndrome.

To help you keep track of the most important programs over the next seven days, here’s our guide to everything worth watching, whether it’s on broadcast, cable, or streaming for September 3rd – 9th (all times Eastern):

Twin Peaks: The Return (Showtime, Sunday 8pm)

David Lynch and Mark Frost’s seminal series finally comes to an end, penned, designed and directed by the original masterminds behind it. “Part 16” seems to have set everything up for the highly anticipated double-episode finale, but today is the day we find out if Lynch and Frost finally answer all our questions: the ones involving details like whether Mr. C still stinks of garmonbozia and the ones that have kept us up at night, such as why Laura Palmer was “the one.” Hopefully, Twin Peaks: The Return provides the closure everyone needed back in the ’90s.

Biggie: The Life of Notorious B.I.G (A&E, Monday 8pm)

This is the first biopic authorized by Christopher Wallace’s estate and promises an intimate look at the life of the rapper and his influence in music. Directed by Mark Ford, Biggie: The Life of Notorious B.I.G features interviews with both close family, including widow Faith Evans and mother Voletta Wallace, as well as friends, collaborators, and rap and hip-hop heavyweights like “Diddy” Combs, Jay-Z, and Nas. The documentary is set to follow Biggie’s youth in Brooklyn and his rise to fame, and explore his relationships with Lil’ Kim and Tupac Shakur, up to his untimely death.

The Grown Ups (PBS)

This week’s POV recommendation is a documentary that has been making the rounds in film festivals around the world. Director Maite Alberdi captures the everyday life of four middle-aged friends in a school for people with Down Syndrome, as well as their search for greater autonomy in a world that is not particularly welcoming to the disabled.

American Horror Story: Cult (FX, Tuesday 10pm)

The seventh season of Ryan Murphy’s horror anthology arrives, adding to the atmosphere of fear hanging around clowns in anticipation to the It movie release later this week. Following tradition, the teasers are cryptic but drop enough hints to give us a sense of what is coming up: action will take place in Michigan, and the starting point will be the 2016 presidential election. American Horror Story: Cult seems to be particularly focused on the nature of fear, both social — according to Murphy, the show will highlight “people who are ignored by the current administration and who are afraid and feel terrorized that their lives are going to be taken away” — and personal, like coulrophobia.

You’re the Worst (FX, Wednesday 10pm)

After ending a tumultuous third season for the characters with a failed marriage proposal that broke not only Gretchen’s heart, You’re the Worst returns. However, hope is not lost: creator Stephen Falk has said that the starring couple is not done yet, but the road to reconciliation will be full with the eccentric shenanigans that distinguish the show.

Bojack Horseman (Netflix, Friday)

Bojack Horseman‘s Season 4 picks up with the absence of its protagonist. Bojack left town and a lot has happened in Hollywoo in the meantime: Diane is working on a blog, Princess Carolyn seems close to settling down and starting a family, Mr. Peanutbutter is running for governor, and  Todd meets someone who might be Bojack’s daughter. You know, minor stuff. From the looks of it, Netflix’s animated horse will keep up the comedy with the same levels of existential angst.
