It's Official: Alden Ehrenreich Cast as Young Han Solo in the Spin-Off

Alden Ehrenreich

Well, there we have it. Sources are reporting that it's now official that young actor Alden Ehrenreich will play young Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie. As we already know, co-directors Chris Miller & Phil Lord are working on the new Han Solo solo movie, due in theaters in 2018, and they've been hard at work casting the various roles. Ehrenreich beat out strong contenders like Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Jack Reynor, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen and plenty others for the Solo gig. Many cinephiles should quite familiar with Alden Ehrenreich as he was in one of the best scenes of the Coen Brothers' recent Hail Caesar!, and was in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine before that. He's an excellent choice.

The news was confirmed by Deadline, where they state that Ehrenreich is "negotiating to seal the deal" and sign all the contracts. As we've come to expect from Lucasfilm, Alden won't be able to talk about this at all until the movie hits theaters in late 2018. After seeing him in Hail Caesar! (in the "Would that it twere so simple" scene), it's pretty clear he is extremely talented and obviously would eventually land something big. Ehrenreich has also appeared in Beautiful Creatures, Park Chan-wook's Stoker and Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, so he already has quite a bit of experience. No other plot or character details were revealed, but at least we have an idea of the age/timing they're going for with this Han Solo movie. I'm a bit excited already.
