Who Will Zendaya Play In The New Spider-Man Movie? We Have a Theory.

Zendaya

The new Spider-Man movie, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, will be the first feature collaboration between the Disney-owned Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. As the first full film in this new partnership that brings Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it will be an interesting test of whether or not the two studios can work together to make a competent Spider-Man film after Sony tried and mostly fumbled around with its reboot. And while we know that we’ll be seeing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man (and maybe Aunt May) for the first time in Captain America: Civil War in May, there are still a number of casting decisions that will need to be made before the Jon Watts-directed reboot hits theaters in 2017.

The first major casting decision for the stand-alone movie was announced today. The production will tap Disney Channel star slash actress slash singer Zendaya in a mysterious role being billed only as “Michele” at this point. According to the initial report from Deadline, no one is providing details on whether she will be a romantic lead opposite Peter Parker.

The only Michelle in comics is Michele Gonzales, a character introduced in Marc Guggenheim’s Amazing Spider-Man run as Peter Parker’s roommate.

That’s one possibility. Here’s another. I found it via a Tweet from my Storm of Spoilers co-host Dave Gonzales. It posits that if the production is looking to cast a major character from the comics that matches Zendaya’s look, they might be thinking about Ava Ayala, or White Tiger, from the Ultimate Spider-Man TV show.

It’s worth considering, especially if this character is going to be more than Peter Parker’s roommate:

The production is still in very early stages of development, so consider a lot of this fluid. What we know is that Zendaya is joining the cast of Spider-Man. More to come, I’d imagine.
