Here it is, the first full trailer for Ghostbusters, aka the Ghostbusters reboot, aka the all-female Ghostbusters. Whatever, it’s just a movie. That happens to be about women busting ghosts. And it looks hilarious, as we could expect from writer-director Paul Feig and a main quartet consisting of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
The spot starts off with some familiar activity. There’s a scene in a library straight out of the 1984 original and a subway tunnel shot that reminds me of a part of Ghostbusters II. And look, it’s Slimer! And listen, it’s the familiar theme song! Otherwise, there are also plenty of differences. Definitely a ton more ghosts. And maybe more slime. And some demonic possession. More of an effort to be goofy and gross and all around just funnier (a problem?).
This isn’t going to be the same movie, and that’s great. It looks and sounds like a Ghostbusters movie made by Paul Feig. If you like what he’s done in the past, that’s a good thing. If you don’t like what he does, and especially if you can’t get over the focus on female characters, then I’m sorry but you can just move on and ignore it.
Personally, as a lifelong Ghostbusters fan who can recall where I was when I first saw the first movie on the big screen and the feeling I got from it as a little kid, I can’t wait. Especially because I need more of Jones and McKinnon in particular. They kill it in this trailer way more than McCarthy and Wiig.
Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 15, 2016.
Here’s the brief synopsis available so far:
