Watch The Trippy First 7 Minutes of The Horror Anthology Film Southbound

The Orchard

Fans of the horror anthology series V/H/S will be interested in this one. The studio releasing Southbound, a new horror anthology about finding hell on the open road, has released the first 7 minutes of the film online.

Courtesy of The Orchard, this opening sequence from Southbound is part of a segment about two men who are running from something, only to find themselves being pursued by a group of mysterious phantoms and trapped at a highway reststop. The opening segment comes from V/H/S alums Radio Silence, a filmmaking collective that delivered the haunted house segment in the first V/H/S film.

The other segments come from other V/H/S alums such as Roxanne Benjamin and David Bruckner. You can find out more in Rob Hunter’s review from Fantastic Fest, in which he says that “like almost every anthology film ever made, [Southbound] is a mixed bag, but that said there are no absolute stinkers here. Budgetary restrictions occasionally rear their head in the area of visual effects, and some of the stories seem content treading somewhat familiar ground, but the genius at work here is its commitment to making this a far more cohesive film than the fractured anthologies we’re used to.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

On a desolate stretch of desert highway, weary travelers—two men on the run from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation—are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in these interwoven tales of terror and remorse on the open road.

Southbound will be in theaters for a limited release starting February 5 and on VOD starting February 9. It stars Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Fabianne Therese, Nathalie Love, Hannah Marks, Dana Gould, Mather Zickel, David Yow, Matt Peters and Larry Fessenden.
