"Why is everyone on this island addicted to drama?" Magnolia Pictures has debuted a trailer for the Cuban drag queen drama Viva, starring actor Héctor Medina as Jesus, a young hairdresser who dreams of being a drag performer. The film played to some solid reviews at the Telluride Film Festival last year, and looks like an upbeat, energetic film about finding your true self. One review from The Playlist notes "how the director captures the rhythm of Jesus' life in the city, chronicling his poverty, and conveying his dignity" and says it features "strong performances by its three leads". Not everyone is going to be into this, but it's worth giving a shot, as this trailer really sells it well. There's more to this story, including the electric vibe of Cuba.
Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Paddy Breathnach's Viva, in high def from Apple:
Viva stars Héctor Medina as Jesus, a young hairdresser working at a Havana nightclub that showcases drag performers, who dreams of being a performer himself. Encouraged by his mentor, Mama (Luis Alberto García), Jesus finally gets his chance to take the stage. But when his estranged father Angel (Jorge Perugorría) abruptly reenters his life, his world is quickly turned upside down. As father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each other, Viva becomes a love story as the men struggle to understand one another and reconcile as a family. Viva is directed by veteran Irish filmmaker Paddy Breathnach, from a screenplay by Mark O'Halloran. It premiered at the 2015 Telluride Film Festival and is also playing at Sundance, plus it's on the Academy Award's Best Foreign Language Film shortlist for this year. Magnolia Pictures will be releasing Viva starting February 5th, 2016 next month. Anyone curious?
