Earlier this evening, I recorded a podcast with two of my favorite humans — Dave Gonzales and Joanna Robinson — for a big Fighting in the War Room Star Wars special episode. Seeing as we’re the Storm of Spoilers crew, you can guess what kind of topics were on our agenda. (If you guess “wild speculation” and “crazy theories,” you nailed it). One thing we discussed off-air was the notion that we’re beginning to get into the part of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens marketing period in which little bits of footage could churn out details that might be better enjoyed on the big screen when the movie comes out next week.
For that reason, you might want to skip this new trailer. It comes courtesy of the folks at JoBlo, was made for Chinese markets, and includes some scenes that might be dipping a toe into the spoiler pool.
Not that you should really care about 2-seconds of out-of-context footage ruining your experience. You’re an adult (mostly). You might also be the kind of person who has already purchased tickets to see The Force Awakens multiple times. There’s no spoiler, plot detail or production still that will prevent the blood from rushing to your head when that opening crawl starts to roll.
But even though I don’t believe that spoilers are inherently bad, I understand. We’re so very close to actually being able to see a new Star Wars movie in a movie theater for the first time in 10 years. And it’s possible we may finally see a Star Wars movie that lives up to trilogy that is over three decades old. So if you’re trying to remain pure, to any extent, go ahead and sit this one out.
For everyone else, check out this awesome trailer:
That’s some new Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) dialogue, some new threatening language from Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke and all kinds of talk about crushing the Resistance.
The big winner is the shot of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) back behind the controls of the Millennium Falcon alongside some fresh-eyed passengers.
The most regrettable moment is when we see said Millennium Falcon crash land on a snow planet, bouncing off a few trees in the process. Perhaps that’s a moment that will be less consequential in the actual movie. There’s no way to know just yet.
And holy shit, that last shot.
The rest is a little bit more of what we’ve already seen in previous trailers. At this point, I’m more than ready to just see the entire movie. And then, of course, move on to speculation and rumors about the two Star Wars movies that will follow it. Not to mention the spin-offs? Have we mentioned the spin-offs?
The Force Awakens opens next week. Everyone is ready. Clearly.
