Holy shit, this is fun. Just as everyone was about to go let sugarplums dance through their heads on Christmas Eve, Fox has released a 3-minute long red band trailer. If you agree with the numerous criticisms of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, this is the movie for you. Fox signed off on the Deadpool movie that fans have kept locked in their hearts for years.
This trailer, which reveals plenty of extra Wade Wilson backstory and shows of a good helping of brutal action, is all-in on snarky, foul-mouthed, unapologetically violent Deadpool. I don’t know about you, but for the first time in a number of years, I’m actually looking forward to Valentine’s Day.
One more Deadpool trailer is due to drop on Christmas Day during NBA basketball on ABC. Expect that one to have less — well, less of most of what’s in this trailer. Until then, let’s enjoy our early Christmas gift from the merc in red.
A few highlights, as there are so many fun moments in this one.
1. Sword violence is something I’d like to see a lot of in Deadpool. Namely, stuff exactly like this:
2. They’ve also done a great job with the make-up effects on post-op Wade Wilson. He looks much gnarlier in this much clearer view.
3. Director Tim Miller and team are finding some clever ways for Deadpool to kill his many targets.
4. Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead are looking pretty intense. The effects on Colossus are much further along than we saw in the previous trailer.
5. The violence is also much further along than what we’ve seen in previous trailers. Deadpool, unlike his more boyscout-ish cohorts in the ranks of the X-Men, is a pragmatist. Whatever gets the job done:
6. And finally, the trailer’s best non-Deadpool trick: our first look at exactly what Negasonic Teenage Warhead (played by Brianna Hildebrand) can do. Spoiler alert: it’s… energetic.
This trailer has been online for all of about a half hour at our time of publication. And if we’re being honest, I’ve already watched it more than 5 times on my television. Is this an indication of my sad and lonely Christmas Eve? Not specifically. The trailer is really fucking good. Here’s hoping the movie follows suit.
